Toy Joy Art Show 2011!
Homoscope: Short Queer Cinema Tonight
If there's one thing that will bring the boys (and girls) to the yard, it's a good dance party that follows a night of thought provoking art cinema. Of course, it's smart to throw in a drink special for good measure. Tonight, Homoscope, an international queer short cinema event, will do just that at Artseen Alliance, with all benefits going to support the arts programs at ALLGO, a statewide organization for queer people of color.
Can I See Some ID?: Cantanker Magazine Release Party
Austin's own visual art magazine, Cantanker, is once again celebrating the release of a new issue. he seventh installment of the carefully designed contemporary art publication revolves around the theme of identity. To celebrate the release of IDENTITY, Cantanker is throwing a party that includes performances by musicians and artists. Tonight at 7pm, the talented likes of Coma in Algiers and VC CHLDKRFT gather at Spider House to entertain fans of music and art alike. Joining the more traditional Austin party line-up of bands and DJs are local visual artists including accomplished cut paper and stop-motion animator Eric Power.

Austinist Show Preview: New Year's Eve @ Spider House
Spider House and the United States Art Authority, along with yours truly, want to keep you away from downtown this New Year’s Eve. Sure the shenanigans on 6th St. is always stirring but keeping within the cozy confines of the campus area is arguably safer and largely less expensive. Spider House hosts a solid line-up of DJ’s with a couple of live acts thrown in for good measure. Doors are at 8 p.m. and the $12 tickets can be purchased in advance via Front Gate Tickets.

The Accidental Gentrifist: Positively Phototactic
Even the airplanes on approach to Bergstrom looked fake, forced by the low ceiling to approach at a tight angle, like models from a Japanese monster movie, their blinking forms visible in great detail as they fell inches above wet rooftops, the heavy air muffling all but the lowest drone of the engines.
Austinist Giveaway: Fun Fun Fun Fest 2007
Fun Fun Fun Fest captured more than a few hearts last December on a cold winter evening with a three-stage-pronged attack that provided ample genres for everyone in attendance. Some of the stand-out acts included Spoon, The Black Angels, The Octopus Project, Peaches, and Prefuse 73. This year, the fest is back, bigger than before, and a month earlier to boot. November 3rd and 4th will see Waterloo Park transformed into a musical carnival featuring...

Austin's Gold Rush
If you happened to be downtown two weekends ago, you might have found yourself startled, amused, or even aroused (it’s okay, you’ll be totally accepted at some clubs in Japan) by the sight of four human forms wandering the streets in golden, skin-tight zentai suits. There must be something in the way head-to-toe spandex outfits cling to one’s body, because clubbers all over downtown were completely enamored with the mysterious beings - perhaps it...
Crush Out Austin: Pedro Leal
It's the short-haired waitress at Spider House, or the barista at Flipnotics. It's the winsome Bookpeople guy with glasses, or that guy in all the plays at Salvage Vanguard. It's your local secret crush. It's old news that Austin has evolved from a sleepy college town into a burgeoning city of big-city transplants, international ex-pats, Houston/Dallas refugees and former Californians. With this influx has come the influence of new ideas about urban density, mass...
Cockfight Ethics: Bring Me The Ugly
[Editor's note: Cockfight Ethics is a biweekly column written by a long-time Austin opinion-monger and word-slanger, Percy Julian. The opinions expressed herein are the writer’s, and the writer’s alone. They do not necessarily represent those of the Austinist or its editorial staff.] If the other articles don’t hurt me later, this one will, initially. I go to Spider House and Beauty Bar quite often. And each time, I can’t help but to think “Are these...
I Luv Video To Move! ... Down The Street
You know that abandoned building on 29th and Guadalupe, just across the street from Taco Shack, in between Ruby's BBQ and Spider House? You know, the one whose east wall has been a graffitti artist's dream for over a year? C'mon! The one where Steaming Wolf Penis played an informal performance during Snake By Snakepit? Alright, well, over the past couple weeks you may have noticed local artist Justin Prince painting a mural of...
