Taking Stock: Austinist's Guide To The Soup Peddler

Taking Stock: Austinist's Guide To The Soup Peddler

After moving to Austin from New York last year, it was easy to feel disappointment in the limited food delivery options available. The restaurant delivery services aren't always prompt and charge steep delivery fees, many of the good ethnic food restaurants are dine-in or take-out only, and the best of the pizza places only deliver within a mile or two of their locations. Which brings us to The Soup Peddler, a unique concept in... more ›

Because Gazpacho Appeases the Gods of Summer...

Last week's interview with The Soup Peddler (a/k/a David Ansel) perhaps left you breathless with his promise to unveil a gazpacho recipe from his book, The Soup Peddler's Slow and Difficult Soups. But don't be fooled: this recipe actually errs on the side of quick and easy, so let your tastebuds seize the dream. Gazpacho Andaluz 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil 4 cloves garlic 1(6-inch) section of baguette, sliced lengthwise 1 onion, chopped... more ›

Austinist Interview: Talking Soup with David Ansel

In America, we rock summertime barbeque. Hamburgers, ribs and the sacrosanct tofu pup all roast under our fair dominion. But soups are not quite within the purview. Austin's very own authority on the subject is trying to change that. His name is David Ansel, known to many as The Soup Peddler. He rose to fame locally in 2002 by delivering homemade soup to residents of Bouldin Creek (atop a yellow bicycle, of course, with... more ›

Pacha: Good for the soul

One of the Austinist's favorite pick-me-up spots is Pacha on Burnet Road. Pacha is a small, colorful, family-owned coffeeshop/cafe that boasts a menu of espresso beverages, smoothies, empanadas, homemade soups, salads, quiches, and so much more. They also serve beer and wine, if a different sort of pick-me-up is what you crave. The South American inspired decor is bright and welcoming, and the owners buy many of the Bolivian crafts on display from two cooperatives, Fundacion Asur and Artecampo, that support the indigenous cultures. It's a perfect place for a light lunch or a lazy Sunday afternoon. The Austinist recommends the chai latte, a sweet, creamy tea with hints of cinnamon and spices. Soooo tasty... more ›
