When Sound Team—one of Austin's more recent ill-fated major label breakthrough contenders—split up in 2007, the two principal songwriters Bill Baird and Matt Oliver went their separate ways and, as principal songwriters often do, formed new vehicles for their creative impulses. Baird had already been working as Sunset as early as 2006, and he continues to consistently release music and perform around town with that group. Until recently though, Oliver had been flying under the radar a bit. After playing a few shows earlier this year with his new trio, initially named The Minotaur, he renamed the band TV Torso (which, perhaps not incidentally, is the title of a Sound Team song), and… continued to fly underneath the radar. Until late last month that is: with a move copped straight from the Use Your Illusion playbook, Oliver & co. dropped two 7” singles on the same day. It was worth the wait for their recorded debut; both singles, whose a-sides are "The Black Mask" and "Days of Being Wild," are excellent displays of moody, intelligent, fuzzed-out pop, and are more direct than much of Oliver’s previous work with Sound Team.

As we reflect on the fortune of free shows Transmission delivered to our doorstep this week, it’s with bittersweet symphony (bum bum bum, bum bum bum) that we part ways with Free Week. We are eternally grateful for the massive supply of great music and an excuse to party for seven days straight while never once worrying about having the cash for cover. But alas, there’s still a bit more to see! Saturday night includes many promising acts, but we especially recommend the lineup at Emo’s: DJ Remy Mac, The Black, International Waters and The Minotaurs.

SureFire Media + Promotion along with Do512.com and yours truly present a kick-ass show at Antone’s this week that supercedes all bad-ass shows. A quadruple line-up of fast emerging local acts takes over the famous 4th St. venue this Thursday evening to offer a wide range of pop, rock, and beyond.

While every performance the Church of the Friendly Ghost puts on is assuredly special, this Wednesday evening they will host three diverse acts at the Salvage Vanguard Theatre sure to satisfy your every experimental, avant-garde whim.

It's been a big year for local acts. Big name bands like Spoon, Iron & Wine and Okkervil River made a huge impact on the independent music scene world-wide, while up and coming acts like White Denim and Moth!Fight! captured our attention at the indie rock water cooler all year long. As rising hopes and swelling egos swept the town alongside buzz and bravado, we parted ways with bands like SOUND Team and Clap!Clap!.
