Sonic Youth has been getting a lot of attention lately, to the point where they're appearing in really weird places, like "Fresh Air" and stuff. This seems strange to us, since we treasured our cassette of "Goo" in ninth grade and certainly would never have thought of SY as NPR-approved Culture. Thankfully, the new documentary Sleeping Nights Awake is a bit different from these official sanctifications of Kim, Thurston, et al....

It's not even Christmas yet, and we're still talking about Murder City Devils at Fun Fun Fun Fest, but that won't stop us from gearing up to begin bringing you the latest rumors and confirmations regarding 2008's SXSW music festival. It's right around the corner, and we're not the only ones with our minds set towards March: plenty of bands have already announced their intentions to be here for the week. ...

You know about the big show tonight at Stubb’s already. There’s a little bonus at the end for the attendees (and anyone else for that matter!) -- Austin’s own Peel will bring in the early hours of Saturday. The band will present its indie-pop goodies inside at the venue immediately after Sonic Youth is done outdoors. Peel’s self-titled full-length debut can be purchased via their website or from their label, Peek-A-Boo Records. Peel: [official]......

Marfa, TX is a tiny, strange place crawling with perpetually drunk twenty-somethings that fancy themselves as misfit "artists". The weather is nice, though. It's still not enough to make us want to drive seven hours this weekend to celebrate the megalomaniacal minimalist Donald Judd's legacy by taking tequila shots around a maypole. We're gonna save ourselves the nightmarish Orwellian experience that is worshipping a yankee carpetbagger and stick around Austin. Who in the hell......

Dandi Wind - Concrete Igloo (Summer Lovers Unlimited Music) Ok, we are fond of electronic duos. Even more so when they hail from Canada. Dandi Wind (comprised of Dandelion Wind Opaine and Szam Findlay) tests our undying affection with their hit or miss debut, Concrete Igloo. The duo combines a variety of genres to conjure up an adrenaline fueled, almost destructive sound that clicks wonderfully on songs like “Slumlord” and “Apotemnophilia.” The insistent “Hitch-Hiker” could......

The foundations of Emo's Lounge are going to shake on Thursday when Ume, Chicago's The Narrator and Bring Back the Guns cause a commotion that will be off the Richter scale. Ume's music is like the soundtrack to a beautiful fairytale, or a terribly haunting ghost story. The group is often compared to early Sonic Youth or Blonde Redhead, but the passion and fury of their performances can't be understated. Guitarist/vocalist Lauren Lawson plays like......

Wilco Sky Blue Sky (Nonesuch) Recorded in Wilco's own Chicago studio, the album was recorded by TJ Doherty (the Hold Steady, Sonic Youth) and mixed by Jim Scott (the Rolling Stones, the Dixie Chicks), Sky Blue Sky finds Tweedy & Co. leaning closer to the down-home gritty side of their sound, all while bending glass with avant-jazz guitar hero Nels Cline. Full of guitars and electricity, songs like "Impossible Germany" highlight the relationship between......

Shearwater Palo Santo Remastered, Expanded (Matador) The release of Palo Santo in 2006 marked Jonathan Meiburg's emergence from the shadow of the 'O' into full light. The songs are dense, revealing themselves slowly and carefully amidst moments of reflective sincerity and emotional cacophony with equal precision. Shearwater's sound is difficult to pin down, but the songs are always centered around Meiburg's unfaltering voice, a dark but lilting instrument that narrows the gap between fragility......

We're back in New York where people are trying to recover from SXSW, here's the last entry of Nate from My Brightest Diamond's Austin tour diary he kept for us. Read the first part here. Over at Gothamist we've got Pela's tour diary...we totally snuck in to their hotel room and found it under their pillow. SXSW DAY 2: A DAY, A NIGHT TO REMEMBER In contrast to my first 24 hours here at the......

For 15 years, Yokohama's Luminous Orange have been crafting a sound of equal parts gentle Kim Deal-style female vocals, noisy guitar feedback, and rhythms that owe debts to both shoegaze and Sonic Youth. The resolutely indie-rock Japanese outfit makes a return visit to SXSW next month after a successful trip in 2006. Austinist spoke with Luminous Orange founder and vocalist/guitarist Rie Takeuchi about the band's SXSW experiences, along with their general distaste for Texas'......

Merry Christmas kiddos, just about all you have to look forward to this week record shopping is a stocking-ready collection of reissues and collections. Oh, and Ghostface. Ghostface Killah More Fish (Def Jam) Wu Tang member and Staten Island resident Ghostface has indeed delivered more fish. In a manner somewhat reminiscent of the good old days (now nearly ten years ago, making Ghost a near AARP card holder among rappers), More Fish provides the......

Hey, did you hear that Google bought YouTube? No? Well, then go buy some records. Damien Jurado And Now That I'm In Your Shadow (Secretly Canadian) October's releases seem to be in touch with the temperature drop (however small) and shift of mood. Damien Jurado's latest offering is the perfect example: dark, sparing treatments on the decline of romance in the Midwest, a disagreement between friends in the back of a pickup truck, and......

This being one of those quality-over-quantity weekends for bands and rocking and, y'know, that kind of thing, you won't really have to make any tough decisions. Friday night you got Sonic Youth w/Awesome Color at Stubb's. Thurston & Co. have aged so gracefully they just might be wheeled onto the stage encased in blocks of carbonite; they're like 50 years old! Nonetheless, if you've never seen Kim Gordon do her cheerleader dance, or heard......

With new shows on sale from Sonic Youth, INXS, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Rancid, it seems to be college radio nostalgia week for the concert update. There are also a nice batch of new indie shows, including Tapes 'n' Tapes for Pitchfork fans, Dios Malos for the mellow types, The Futureheads for the edgy punky stuff, and even Tilly and the Wall for you tap dancers. On with the shows: May: 5/10 -......

Metric emerged a few years ago from Toronto's thriving indie scene, a fact which in and of itself seems to put a band on most hipster radar screens. To be fair, they're not technically from there - before and after forming in New York City in the late 90s, various members of the quartet floated around parts of Canada and the United States. They've collaborated extensively with Toronto staples Broken Social Scene, kc Accidental,......

Imagine you are a 14-year-old musician living in Australia, accustomed to recording songs for your punk rock band in your bedroom. All of a sudden, Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth is singing your praises, and you sign to Grand Royal (the Beastie Boys’ now defunct label). Over the next 11 years, you release five solo indie-pop albums, start your own record label, and collaborate with artists such as Ben Kweller, Ben Folds, Petra Haden,......
