Two Austinites Win Spirit Awards

This past Saturday, two Austinites took home Independent Spirit Awards! Chris Eska took home the "John Cassavetes Award" for his feature August evening, and Laura Dunn took home the "Truer than Fiction Award" for her film The Unforeseen, a documentary look at the controversy surrounding Austin's real estate development and its impact on the Edwards Aquifer and Barton Springs. more ›

Austinist Talks To Ron Burgundy Will Ferrell

Last Saturday, actor Will Ferrell made a quick stop in Austin during a press tour for his new film Semi-Pro. He also attended a sneak preview of the film and did a Q&A session at the Alamo Drafthouse, where attendees were required to dress in 70's basketball attire for admission - you can see the Drafthouse "team photo" here. Austinist's Tom Thornton and Gordon And The Whale's Chase Whale spoke briefly to Ferrell during the media day. more ›

Exercise Your Choppers On Some Good, Hard, um, Food!

As we reported last week, the Austin-birthed Teeth will be hitting our silver screens on Friday, January 25th. But of course, it would be a grievous crime against the good people of Austin to not give them the chance to see this genre-bending flick before the rest of the unwashed masses, so the tireless miracle-workers over at Ain't It Cool News and the Alamo Drafthouse have cooked up a little sneak preview for our collective cringing pleasure, with Director Mitchell Lichtenstein live in person to field all of your probing questions. more ›

Week Around the -Ists

Week Around the -Ists

Londonist: Photo by ChloeLondonist got the big scoop of the week with what may be the first images of notorious street artist Banksy in action. They also got on a runaway train without an operator provoking a response from the transport authorities. Elsewhere, London's answer to Central Station is about to open for business, and Londonist got a sneak preview. Meanwhile, spooky goings-on beneath London Bridge, where a cache of skeletons provided an apt story... more ›

Shoot Fake Infants at the Alamo This Thursday

Shoot Fake Infants at the Alamo This Thursday

So apparently this new movie not only makes Paul Giamatti into a bad guy, but also features a gunplay scene filmed entirely while the principal battlers are falling from airplanes, as well as several semi-dangerous-looking gunfights with a human infant in the middle of the proceedings. Clive Owen is the good guy—once again, as in "Children of Men", protecting a baby that's not his own (come on guys, doesn't Clive Owen deserve his own freaking... more ›

Sneak Preview of Michael Moore's Sicko

Sneak Preview of Michael Moore's Sicko

Whether you like Michael Moore or think he's an anti-American nutjob, the guy's coming out with a new movie. Sicko is a study of America's (failing) health care system. Moore talks to victims (like a man who had to choose which of his two severed fingers to reattach, because he couldn't afford both) and perpetrators (oft-repentant health insurance agents) of the U.S. health care system, then trots (okay, maybe plods) around the globe in search... more ›

Rodriguez and Tarantino Debut Grindhouse Trailer

While we were away for the holidays, Austin's big movie project of 2006 has been making some waves. Dimension Films has unveiled the official website for the Quentin Tarantino and Robert Rodriguez collaboration Grindhouse, and the HD trailer is now available at Yahoo! Movies. For those who hadn't heard, both directors filmed in and around Austin throughout 2006 on this B-movie double bill. Rodriguez's "Planet Terror" is a zombie flick, while Tarantino's "Death Proof"... more ›

AFS Sneak Preview: Infamous

AFS Sneak Preview: Infamous

Some people may shy away from Infamous, thinking there is no need to see two movies in one year about the complex character of Truman Capote. That would be a mistake. This film is getting favorable reviews, which is quite a feat considering it must compete in the shadow of a virtuoso performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the first biopic. And, the movie was filmed in Austin. So what more do you want? How... more ›

Screening: How To Eat Fried Worms

Screening: How To Eat Fried Worms

We remember the things our friends used to dare us to eat—dog kibble, crayons, congealed bacon grease—and that was just last month. We also remember the last time we won a bet (thank you, Italy), and the last time we felt social pressure to fit in (henna tattoos can look real if done professionally). That’s why the screen adaptation of Thomas Rockwell’s book, How To Eat Fried Worms is something we’ve been waiting for since we heard about the thousands of Austin actors who showed up for the open casting call last summer. more ›

Don't Be the LCD: This Week's New Movie Releases!

Don't Be the LCD: This Week's New Movie Releases!

Slim pickin's today, friends. You can either choose a movie starring Oscar winners/nominees (which of course doesn't guarantee anything), or you can go with movies that cater to the lowest common denominator. Which is apparently pretty damn low these days. *Inside Man Denzel Washington, Clive Owen, Jodie Foster. Kudos, Spike Lee, for making a movie with one fine-lookin’ cast. (*Ed. Note: We saw a sneak preview of this movie and really enjoyed the nuances... more ›

Austinist Reviews Danceworks Laboratory

Austinist Reviews Danceworks Laboratory

The following review is from new contributor Jonathon. In modern dance, a "works-in-progress" showing is somewhere between a rough draft and a teaser – it's a sneak preview of work that'll show up later in the year as a longer, more polished product. Danceworks Laboratory, the latest works-in-progress showing from Sharir + Bustamante Danceworks, features the work of José Bustamante and two international choreographers in varying degrees of artistic readiness. Though we tried to go... more ›
