The Accidental Gentrifist: April Fools, 12 Months a Year
The allegorical narrative of Moses bringing down the Ten Commandments represents a massive backwards step for humankind, culturally and intellectually...Modern monotheism’s overlooked Pandora’s Box.

In a dazzlingly cross-referency evening, Yo La Tengo will present Four Flies on Grey Velvet, the Dario Argento flick that most influenced them as a band. Also on the bill is Cockaboody, an animated film drawn by YLT drummer...

Ultimate Simpsons Experience @ Alamo Drafthouse
What more can really be said about the Simpsons and the indelible yellow smudge they've left on pop culture? News Bits!
Dick Durbin thinks Cheney should seek professional help. Judging from the evidence, Durbin might have a point. Um. Did you know that the US was carrying out airstrikes in Somalia? "Strikes," as in plural? Somebody should have told us. Poor little Fox, feeling cash-strapped, is trying to sleuth out who uploaded eps of "24" and "The Simpsons" to YouTube. Kids who grow up in houses with books and educational games are spanked less often....
HMS Pinafore, or Thirty Years of Gilbert and Sullivan in Austin
Gilbert and Sullivan: the names may not sound familiar to you, but their music has been referenced very often in pop culture. If you haven't seen any of their works, you may have heard bits and pieces on an episode of the Simpsons or Family Guy. Maybe you saw the Mike Leigh film, Topsy-Turvy (if you didn't, you aren't missing much). Those of you unfamiliar with the British operetta-writing pair: it's time to get schooled....
Fun is Fun
We know a lot of you probably sport one of those heady "Kill Your Television" bumper stickers. And. That's. Cool. But even the smartest of you would probably admit that The Simpsons is not only damn good television, but one hell of a piece of artistic entertainment. So, let's all rejoice at the news today that The Simpsons has been picked up by Fox for two more years. Sure, the show may not be as good as it was ten years ago or so, and it may not necessarily be 'appointment television' anymore - a term, we guess, has gone by the wayside with the ubiquity of Tivo, but it is still funny and has become comfort-tv of sorts. Like the chicken fried steak and mashed potatoes of television. Or the Tofuti sandwich-on-a-hot-day of television, or whatever the hell it is you vegetarians eat. The longest-running prime-time entertainment series is in its 17th season. The only question that remains, "Can they catch Gunsmoke?" Oh, that and what is the best Simpsons episode of all time?
We Need to Chat: "Arrested Development" on tonight!
UPDATE: Tim Goodman, at the San Francisco Chronicle says,"The funniest show on television is all but dead." Come on. How could a show with a character named "Bob Loblaw" (played by the irrepressible Scott Baio) die? !
Going to “The Office” on a Thursday Night...Are We Mad? Yes, Completely.
We can argue this until we’re blue in the face, but at the end of the day, you have to come to terms with it – “The Office” is the best comedy in the history of television. Our apologies to “The Simpsons,” “The Larry Sanders Show,” “Mr. Show,” “Cheers” and whatever else you've got, but Ricky Gervais and Co. set the bar.
