BKLYN Dry Goods Pop-Up Event at STAG
BKLYN Dry Goods, purveyor of meticulously curated men’s vintage clothing, objects, and curiosities, have set up a pop-up shop at South Congress’ STAG for the weekend. The pop-up event starts with a launch party tonight from 7pm-10pm, with an open bar featuring Buffalo Trace whisky and Shiner beer.
American Apparel Disses Nancy Upton
You may have heard of Nancy Upton -- a size 12 woman who entered American Apparel's search for "The Next Big Thing" model contest with a series of tongue-in-cheek photographs of herself gorging on pie, fried chicken, and ranch dressing while clad in her underwear. As Upton had suspected might happen, the company has refused to hire her to model even though she won the popular vote, and sent a rather dismissive and defensive e-mail informing her of this.
American Apparel's icky and objectifying call for submissions read, in part: "We're looking for fresh faces (and curvaceous bods) to fill these babies out. If you think you've got what it takes to be the next XLent model, send us photos of you and your junk to back it up."

Give Local: Guide to Holiday Art Fairs [Part One]
Each year there seem to be more craft fairs and art bazaars offering their locally, handmade goodness as an alternative to the mall shopping scene. We're certainly not complaining - it's hard for us to find holiday joy in line at Wal-Mart on X-mas Eve. We'll be bringing you more details about upcoming holiday art fairs in the coming weeks - until then, check out our rundown of the crafty happenings taking place this weekend.
Your Living Room Owners to Retire, Store May Stick Around
Some residents of South Austin recently received a letter from Your Living Room, the upscale furniture store on South Congress and Barton Springs, informing them that the store owners have decided to retire.
ACL 2008: The Long Walk Home
Day one of ACL 2008 was a long one, but it was jam-packed with sights, sounds and highlights. As usual, the long walk up Barton Springs to the park is a party in itself, featuring a variety of pit-stops that tempt and delight (in between tripping and annoying). There's plenty of distractions to choose from, and in some ways, the walk is a party in itself. Though we did run into more than a few anxious folks looking to buy our tickets before we even made it in a noon today, and more than one person who wanted to show us where Jesus would be making an appearance later, we did check out a couple of things we want to tell you about.
Austin Bites: Shilla
Shilla offers delicious beef and pork bulgogi, tabletop barbecuing for marinated ribs and the like, and whole broiled mackerel. Shilla also offers sushi that, while not exactly top-tier, is fresh and better than we expected.
Giving Is The Reason For The Season
With the promise of receiving many gifts in return, this headlong rush into the temples of consumer culture hardly looks like the selfless goodwill to all mankind, but a few bookstores around Austin are offering the opportunity to participate in the truly noble exercise of helping the needy and downtrodden this season.
Austin Bites: Mighty Fine Burgers, Fries, and Shakes (Hmm, Not So Fine Really)
Mighty Fine Burgers have set themselves up a branding punchline. At the risk of being obvious to the point of heavy-handed, we'll say that Mighty Fine Burgers is not so much mighty fine as somewhat passable.
New Release Tuesday: Studio's Yearbook and Factory Records
Between now and January, New Release Tuesday will focus on 2007 reflections and music news related to both this year's releases, the holidays and 2008's potential. The standard NRT posts will resume in 2008. It will also feature the opinions of the author, who does not represent the Ist network as a whole. What a damn shame. The holiday season is tough for music lovers shopping for other music lovers. This is mostly because...

A teenage gunman wishing to "go down in style" killed 8 people, then himself, at an Omaha Shopping Mall. Hearings began yesterday in landmark case about whether Guantanamo detainees have a constitutional right to challenge their imprisonment. Poof! Two Old-School Albertsons Stores Go All H-E-B
Photo by cote on flickr Fans of creepy, overpriced and sort of socially awkward grocery shopping will be disappointed to read that after weeks of redesigning, adding more people to the store employee rosters, doubling the checkout lanes and stocking shelves with the kind of stuff most of us have become accustomed to buying, H-E-B is ready to re-open two Albertsons stores that had mysteriously remained open under the quirky Albertsons brands into the new...

Week Around the -Ists
SFist witnessed a new apartment building tszuj the skyline with spectacular, gaudy turquoise aplomb, the (informal) renaming of the Mission/SOMA neighborhood border, the return of the Maltese Falcon, the Mayor Gavin Newsom mea culpa-ing over his Hawaiian getaway during the oil spill, and double-decker buses hitting the streets of San Francisco. Oh, and some baseball player named Barry Bonds is a liar whose pants, it seems, are totally on fire. LAist continues to cover the...

Austinist Takes A Look At What Bill Clinton's Been Reading
Once the camera crews, exuberant (and nostalgia seeking) fans, and Illuminati-crying conspiracy theorists had retreated to their respective rocks last week, former President Clinton decided to do some shopping at BookPeople. In town to raise money for Hillary's campaign at the home of long time Clinton family friend Roy Spence of GSD&M, Bill made a stop at BookPeople where he signed over a thousand copies of his new book, Giving: How Each of Us Can...

MisShapes Tonight at Beauty Bar

Last fall, the New York Times wrote about “the phenomenon known as the MisShapes” and their 15 minutes of fame. They've been in countless pop culture magazines, most of which reference the one time that Madonna dropped in on their weekly residency at Don Hill’s in SoHo. They've been on ads for those Eastport backpacks that kids...
