Which One's Pink [Show Review]

             + 5 more

At one time or another many of us have formed a relationship with Pink Floyd’s extensive catalog, listening late night in smoky basements and dorm rooms, singing along quietly in crowded barrooms...whatever your case may be. There’s a timeless energy in their music that finds a home in generations of record collections. While most of us save our interpretations for drunken sing-a-longs and Guitar Hero-esque moments, a select few have the dedication and precision to fulfill the dream and, if only for one night, be the band. Saturday night marked a special occasion as Floyd fans gathered at Seaholm Power Plant for one last hurrah before the doors close and an extensive multi-year reconstruction begins. more ›

"Which One’s Pink?" at Seaholm Power Plant [Show Preview]

Pink Floyd tribute bands are a cottage industry in the music world - in the increasingly unlikely event that the Floyd itself might reunite, a lot of musicians would be put out of work. But this performance is something special. As the event’s website says, “What classic rock music fan hasn’t looked up at the smokestacks at Seaholm Power Plant and envisioned a pink pig flying above?” Local promoter Electric Company is putting that vision into practice with a name borrowed (with permission) from a L.A. tribute act and an epic audiovisual extravaganza that purports to cover the Floyd’s entire career. (Including the Syd Barrett era?) more ›

Preview: Broken Social Scene at Seaholm Power Plant [Tonight, Free]

With all the events, after-shows, parties, and spontaneous outdoor dance parties surrounding ACL weekend, you’d be forgiven for overlooking some of the festival’s incredible (official or not) ancillary events. This is not one of those events to overlook. If you only make it to one show outside of the festival this year, Rare Magazine and WOXY, Austin’s newest internet radio station (which is already endearing itself quite nicely to our community), have made a strong case for this being the one to hit. Of course, we’re referring to the rechristening of the decommissioned Seaholm Power Plant as a live music venue, with none other than the ensemble cast of Toronto’s Broken Social Scene shattering the bottle of champagne on the art-deco columns (figuratively for sure, literally, maybe). more ›

Mid-Century Building Hosts Mid-Air Event

Blue Lapis Light's newest production opened last weekend, and we had chance to take it in. Illumination is the latest site-specific aerial dance work from Blue Lapis Light’s Artistic Director Sally Jacques. We were totally wowed by how pretty the show was. We might've even spent at least part of the time with our mouth hanging open—we were that amazed by the sheer spectacle. Illumination features dancers/aerialists moving around the big open space of the... more ›

Downtown Launch Party Postponed to Wednesday Evening

Tonight's eagerly anticipated launch party for KLRU-TV's Downtown has been rescheduled to tomorrow night, due to the heavy thunderstorms and flash floods that are expected to slam Central Texas. "Rain, hail and thunderstorms don't make for a good party when it's being held at a power plant," as someone our awesome friend aptly put it. The original lineup will remain intact, with featured guests from past episodes of the Emmy Award-winning series performing throughout the... more ›
