Our Indieroke night returns this Tuesday to The Mohawk. What started out as a one-off fling with rock stardom has turned into a monthly gathering of like-minded folks craving that fleeting moment of exhilaration. If you haven’t made it to one yet, we strongly recommend getting there in a timely fashion to get your name and song on the list early…and often. (You know who you are!) We will have multiple song list books going forward to ease that pain.

The Invincible Czars have long had a knack for blending rock with various genres to create entertaining concoctions and unexpected inventions. From ska to metal, from jazz to country, a Czars live show twists and turns through a variety of rhythms and tempos, all while demonstrating their astute musicianship.
What’s the Deal: Leatherbag is the brainchild of super-busy Austin singer/songwriter Randy ‘Bag’ Reynolds. He’s released a few Eps and his debut full-length for Superpop Records, Nowhere Left to Run. Throughout the releases Reynolds has proven that he’s a powerful songwriting force whether he’s playing organic alt. country or garagey, folky rock, or whether he’s alone with his guitar or with a band behind him. Sometimes Reynolds has a strong Dylan-esque sound, but we won’t hold that against him, mainly because the music that accompanies it is enhancing and completely complementary.

It's all in the name of good fun, while (informally) fundraising...
Photo by jetalone on flickrThe third Thursday of November (one week before Big American-Style Thanksgiving) marks Beaujolais Day - setting off a sort of Cannonball Run of wine, with distributors racing to get wildly celebrated bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau, the red wine made exclusively from Gamay grapes produced in the Beaujolais region of France, to market. We were busy drinking some middle-of-the-road Sauvignon Blanc last night or we would have totally reminded you yesterday. According...

A popular dance-workout phenomenon that's been getting asses in shape in New York City and Chicago is now catching on in Austin. It's called the Dance Dance Party Party — think of it as a ladies-only, free-form, DIY Sunday night Rock the Casbah to help you work off that weekend of boozing. In their October/November issue, BUST magazine explains its appeal as bringing back that "giddy, uninhibited spirit of those bygone slumber parties, when you...
Pseudosix Pseudosix (Sonic Boom) Pseudosix began as Tim Perry's solo project, but quickly became a group effort with Emil Amos (Grails, Dolorean), Joe Kelly, and a handful of other local, talented friends. The band has written and recorded with pals from Joggers, Decemberists and The Standard in their relatively short existence, but the impetus has been barreling towards this release since back in the day when Perry wrestled with the nerve to perform live,...
Straylight Run The Needles The Space (Universal Republic) The boys in Straylight Run get all growed up and once-and-for-all shake off any emo-core blow-back leftover from their days in Taking Back Sunday. It’s clear now on their second full-length that ex-TBSers John Nolan and Shaun Cooper, along with Michelle DaRosa and Will Noon, have traded up for triumphant piano builds, layered multi-sex choruses and intelligent vocals. Instead of staying in the realm of what is...
We’ve had a soft spot for Jamie Kennedy ever since his performance as mega film geek Randy Meeks in Wes Craven’s Scream. And we’ve also spent a lot of time watching his short-lived but very funny hidden-camera show, The Jamie Kennedy Experiment (which for our money was much more daring and inventive than that lame-ass Punk’d. For example…). At the tail end of South by Southwest this year, we got a chance to chat with...
Concerned as it is with the decidedly non-visual sensation of smell, Patrick Suskind’s novel Das Parfum would appear an unlikely candidate for a movie. Despite this, or perhaps because of it, the film rights to Das Parfum were offered to everyone from Stanley Kubrick (who declared the book unfilmable) to Tim Burton before they fell into the hands of Tom Tykwer, the German auteur behind Run Lola Run. The result, which opens today, is...

Loud enough for college parties but cute enough to go on your sister’s bedroom wall, sharp enough for wizened indie kids but soft enough for your mom, the endlessly promotable Las Vegas quartet The Killers have balanced themselves between the normally exclusive worlds of rock and pop with a headline-ready alacrity unseen since the heyday of Duran Duran. Their second CD, Sam’s Town, came out Tuesday, and will no doubt outsell everything in existence.
For years, the Austin Film Festival has been one of our favorite events of the year. In the true independent spirit of the town which name it bears, the festival is committed to nurturing and celebrating the work of aspiring filmmakers. Their vision includes the celebration not just of directors and actors, but of the people behind the scenes, most notably, the unsung heroes - the screenwriters. They announced their unbelievable lineup today, and...
Or, if you prefer, swim, bike and then run like hell. The weather is finally cool down to double-digit temps, so it’s a great time to get out and give it all you've got at one of the many races going on this weekend. Arts Run 5K - Saturday, September 9 at 8:30 a.m. We're partial to this race, mostly because the T-shirts look so cool. And it’s all about the shirt, you know....
Since 1996, the Texas Filmmakers’ Production Fund has awarded cash and production services to "emerging film and video artists in the state of Texas... whose work shows promise, skill, and creativity." The Austin Film Society recently announced the winners of its 2006 Production Fund; the awards panel, led by indie film legend Allison Anders, supplied 18 hard-working Texas filmmakers with $125,000 in goods and services, the largest amount the TFPF has awarded to date....

Most of us have a long weekend coming up. And we all know what that means – beer. And lots of it. But remember that the secret to life is balance. And even more importantly, nobody wants to have to see your big beer gut at Barton Springs. So go ahead and soak up the suds, but do us all a favor and burn it off at one of the many fun races going...
President Bush recently added three high-profile Austinites to the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports, according to the Austin Business Journal: Paul Carrozza, founder of Run-Tex Susan Dell, uber-philanthropist and ironman (ironwoman?) athlete Andy Roddick, Austin Java-loitering tennis champ The members of the council will serve a two-year term, during which they're expected to advise the president on all matters concerning "physical fitness, physical activity and sports activities." Quoth Mrs. Dell, in a press...
Irish indie rockers Snow Patrol released their second US album, Eyes Open, earlier this month, following up on the tremendous success of their debut stateside LP, Final Straw. "Run" reached the top 5 in the UK singles chart; its eminently singable chorus and mainstream accessibility ensured their status as one of the most popular British bands here in the states (according to wiki, "Run" was played roughly twenty eight thousand times on US radio stations...
Missed Connections is a never-ending well of stories, humor, advice, and connections. We continue to think that it will fail us; but it never has, and hopefully never will. This week we share the thanks of co-workers for reading material, the thoughts of beer drinking yard dwellers, the remorse of a disc golf killer, and a new Austinite has a rude awakening. 37 Across: Porcelain Throne To the guy who occasionally leaves the daily,...
This is one of those weekends when were are so grateful to be living in Austin. Don't be surprised if we share this sentiment often. It's one of those weekends when there is so much to do, we feel really guilty for even thinking about staying inside. As usually is the case in Austin, the weather is going to be wonderful to be outside. Yeah, we're sleeping in the hammock tonight, after all of our day activities!
