Sports Roundup: Olympics, Vince, Fan Appreciation

  • As the Beijing Olympics moves into its second week, attention moves from the pool to the track. Local athletes who stood out during Week 1 included Ricky Berens, who was part of the US's thrilling win in the 4x200 freestyle relay; Kirsty Coventry, winner of three silver medals while swimming for her native Zimbabwe; Aaron Peirsol, who won a gold medal in the 100 backstroke and a silver in the 200; and Garrett Weber-Gale, who was part of the men's gold-medal winning 4x100 freestyle relay. And who could forget former Longhorn Cat Osterman, who pitched a no-hitter for the US women's softball team and has picked up two wins so far in the tournament.
  • Texas will retire Vince Young's No. 10 jersey in a ceremony at the Longhorns' season opener, Aug. 30 against Florida Atlantic. Young will be in attendance and is hosting a benefit dinner for the Vince Young Foundation on Aug. 29.

Guilty? Mostly Just Stupid

Guilty? Mostly Just Stupid

Image of criminal couple (Bonnie and Clyde) from WikipediaThe media often portrays criminals as warped master-minds, or at least uncaring creeps. A less popular, but more true to form characterization would be just-plain-stupid. Aspiring criminal master-minds, the husband and wife team of Alan and Basilia Gonzalez, were able to round up "four to six accomplices" according to KXAN, but we wouldn't go so far as to call it an organized burglary ring. New Movie Releases: Boo! Bah?

Zombie is the watchword this time around. Not only is Rob Zombie unmasking his take on 1978’s slasher classic Halloween this weekend, the Alamo Drafthouse has also managed to round up a herd of zombie sheep from New Zealand for your viewing (really resisting the urge to say ewe-ing) pleasure. If you could care less about the grisly fate Rob Zombie doles out to lustful babysitters and the thought of zombie sheep does nothing... more ›

Craigslist: Missed Connection

Now that we've finished checking out our stockings, we thought that we'd troll for a holiday Missed Connection. Nothing exciting but we did run across one sad story from very early this morning. Let's hope that most people had a more uneventful Christmas Eve.... Hey Fat Boy! Get Off the Roof!!! Now that I'm up and can't go back to bed I thought I'd see if anyone else had any B&E attempts this evening.... more ›

Do It For Duncan

After the contributor round up last night, some of us new initiates headed over to one of our favorite downtown spots The Velvet Spade. We were just sitting there, minding our own beer when a POLAR BEAR walked through the door. He sauntered casually through the front room, did a round of the place and then came back to the bar where he nestled right into the crowd. After confirming that no one had slipped any hallucinogenic substances into our beer, we learned that it was just Duncan, Austinite Jacob’s beautiful Great Pyranees. more ›

Round Up Round Up!

Well, the Austinist contributor round up at the Hilton last night was an amazing success. What we thought would turn out to be an informal chat about the site turned out to be a business meeting the likes of which we have not been a part of, let alone been in charge of, for years. Austin, you really love us! And you're so damned motivated! more ›
