Matthew Odam is a Sellout

Matthew Odam is a Sellout

Almost two years ago I joined a motley crew of a couple dozen folks looking to enhance the entertainment landscape of Austin and help explode Austinist onto the scene via the wonders of the internets. Since that time, many of the names and faces have changed, but the desire to provide fun, entertaining and informative content to Austinites (and former Austinites) has remained the same. Therefore, it is with a mixture of sadness and excitement... more ›

Selvin Young Named a Doak Walker Candidate

Selvin Young Named a Doak Walker Candidate

Texas may be trotting out a freshman quarterback (Colt McCoy) for the first time in years, but the team is still extremely solid. The defensive line may be the best in the country, the wide receiving corps may be the deepest in school history and, despite the fact that another UT running back (Ramonce Taylor) had a run-in with the weed over the off-season, the tailback position is well staffed, as well. more ›

Now its going to be just as expensive to kill yourself as it is to see a doctor. The proposed tax on cigarettes was approved by the Texas Senate yesterday in an effort to give teachers a long-overdue raise. The Duke Lacrosse rape investigation has led to a massive increase in past rape victims seeking counseling. A Senate committee has recommended that FEMA be abolished, saying it is "beyond repair." Wonder All You Want, But Vince Young is the Real Deal

Wonder All You Want, But Vince Young is the Real Deal

For a young man whose collegiate career was defined by putting up 6s while leading his team to a national championship, it is certainly ironic that the same number now haunts Vince Young. Leaked reports coming from the NFL combine in Indianapolis indicate that the Maxwell Award Winner and Rose Bowl hero scored a paltry six on the Wonderlic test. But in all of our years of watching football, we have never seen a quarterback have to pass a multiple-choice mental aptitude test to win a Super Bowl. more ›

Austinist Interviews Major Applewhite

Austinist Interviews Major Applewhite

As you are probably aware, Longhorn football great and friend of Austinist Major Applewhite recently moved back to Texas to take over as the Offensive Coordinator for the Rice University Owls. He has been busting his tail recruiting and helping to put in place a new offense that coaches hope will make Rice a very competitive team in the upcoming years. With national signing day behind him, Major was able to take some time out... more ›

ESPN Classic to Re-air Rose Bowl Saturday

ESPN Classic to Re-air Rose Bowl Saturday

Instant Clssic? You bet your sweet ass it was. ESPN agrees. As part of an Instant Classic marathon including the other three BCS Bolws, they will be airing Wednesday night's Rose Bowl on ESPN Classic this Saturday at 6pm. Relive all of Vince's amazing heroics, hopefully with a slightly-less-elevated blood pressure than you had Wednesday. We bet with 6:42 left you still won't think they can pull it out. But guess what? They did! more ›

A New Dealer for Your Weekend Sports Fix

As we're all aware, the Rose Bowl is only 26 days, 9 hours, 24 minutes, and 41 seconds from kickoff. But one couldn't ask for a better matchup this Saturday to fill the cold, orange void left by Longhorns' football. more ›

We will not be attending the Rose Bowl. Not only are we not the type to fly cross country for a sporting event, we are also not the type to sell our first born in order to pay for tickets for a sporting event. more ›

Gotta Love Mack

Gotta Love Mack

You may remember last year was a bit sticky for the Horns vis-à-vis getting an invite to the BCS. There were issues surrounding who voted for whom and, of course, the very public politicking by Coach Mack Brown. His pleadings, and probably the fact that the Horns were a better team and a better draw, got the Horns into the Rose Bowl. The funny thing about winning is it changes everything. Now, instead of Mack looking like a politico who says all the right things and is full of fake sincerity but remains a guy who can not win the big one, Mack has become a sincere, genuine, lovable, leader of a family of players who can win the big one. Ah, the fates are fickle. Regardless of how you feel about him, you have to admit he is a pretty sharp guy with a good mind for public relations. more ›

Vote for Longhorns (men and women) in ESPN ESPY Awards

The Texas Longhorns defeated the Michigan Wolverines in thrilling fashion this January, winning their first-ever Rose Bowl and finishing the season ranked 4th in the nation. Dusty Mangum's field-goal as time expired capped off a gutsy performance by the Horns who were led by the brilliant play of double-threat Vince Young. The Horns won the Rose Bowl trophy, but now they are relying on fans' support to win yet another award, the ESPY Award... more ›
