Given the choice of “I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news - which would you like to hear first?” people always want to get that bad news over with, so let’s start there. Nielsen Soundscan reported that music sales had dropped 14% in 2008, and it’s a fact that many big as well as tiny indie retailers have been struggling to survive. Furthermore, indie labels have been shuttering or trimming down as well - Touch and Go records gave the “current state of the economy” as their explanation for ceasing to release new music and for the end of their distribution deals with other labels.

We'll never forget the summer we discovered our parents' abandoned .45 collection in the garage. In between shiny black discs featuring songs we'd been raised on (probably Beach Boys, Marvin Gaye, Chicago), we discovered some gems that were totally new to us. Our first introductions to Nilsson, Harrison's solo stuff, Tim Hardin and Steve Young all happened that summer in the garage, and many a mixtapes for boyfriends of the future were forced to deal with our romantic nostalgia because of it.

From hand guns to glue guns, since coming under new ownership Rio Rita Cafe y Cantina has been taken over by crafters. Weekly craft meetup Arts & and Drafts celebrates its one year anniversary of crafting at Rio Rita.
