Let Jenny Lewis Melt Your Heart [Tonight at Stubb’s]

Let Jenny Lewis Melt Your Heart [Tonight at Stubb’s]

An aching mix of dewy and caustic, Lewis is at her best when confessional, and will certainly never suffer a shortage of idolatrous confessors. more ›

New Release Tuesday: Pierre de Reeder

As Rilo Kiley's bassist, de Reeder has spent years in the limelight, supporting the group that he co-founded through success after success. Most recently, they've been everyone's darlings in the wake of Under the Blacklight's success. But forget about all that. more ›

Concert Announcements: SX May Be Gone, But Look What's Coming

Concert Announcements: SX May Be Gone, But Look What's Coming

The week after SXSW is tough. Everyone is behind on their work and buried in email and errands, all of the out-of-town visitors have headed back to cold climes, and nobody has it in them to head out for a show just yet. To combat the post-SX gloom, we've compiled a list of major concerts coming to Austin in the next 90 days. This is by no means comprehensive (check Showlist Austin for that), but merely a warning about great upcoming events that will likely sell out - indeed, two already have. So peruse the list, hit the appropriate ticket outlet (or Craigslist for Feist or The Cure), and get ready to continue to rock. more ›

Austinist Show Giveaway: Grand Ole Party at Emo's Lounge

San Diego’s Grand Ole Party joins a quality bill of local acts this Saturday at Emo’s Lounge. The band is fresh off a jaunt with Vampire Weekend, having toured with Rilo Kiley prior to that. Produced by Rilo Kiley’s Blake Sennett, the trio’s debut record Humanimals (no connection to Manimal) showcases singer/drummer Kristin Gundrer’s powerful vocal chops that pace Grand Ole Party’s raw garage rock. The album has been available through iTunes this year and a more traditional release on DH Records is expected in early 2008. more ›

The Wizard Reunion @ Alamo Drafthouse

The Wizard Reunion @ Alamo Drafthouse

In an unprecedented programming feat of nostalgia and star power, the Alamo Drafthouse has announced it will screen The Wizard--the awesome/corny paean to all things Nintendo--with cast members Fred Savage, Luke Edwards (the titular wizard) and director Todd Holland live in the theatre on December 7th! Sure, The Wizard was really just a 100-minute commercial for Super Mario Brothers 3. But oh what a commercial it was. Starring a just-barely-into-The Wonder Years Fred Savage, a... more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Rilo Kiley @ Stubb's

If you go to Rilo Kiley’s MySpace page and scroll down, you’ll run into a pillar of adolescent female faces beside comments professing their love for the band and expressing intense jubilation over finally being able to see the group at their local rock club after years of adoration from afar. This is the result of having a gorgeous, strong, sexually candid leading lady - Jenny Lewis - who is very capable of helming... more ›

Capsule Review: The Good Life's Help Wanted Nights

The Good Life Help Wanted Nights (Saddle Creek) The Good Life’s Tim Kasher, also of Cursive, is one of the most prolific and consistent romantic anti-heroes of modern indie rock. He’s released many albums under both titles as well as contributing to his peers’ projects like Rilo Kiley and Bright Eyes (the singer of which got his start playing with Kasher in Commander Venus), and while much of his music is built on heart aching... more ›

New Release Tuesday: Caribou, No Age & Architecture In Helsinki

New Release Tuesday: Caribou, No Age & Architecture In Helsinki

Stay tuned this week for full-length review of the latest New Pornographers and Rilo Kiley albums. Caribou Andorra (Merge) Dan Snaith's project formerly known as Manitoba is the realization of a degree in mathematics, numerous electronic gadgets and a nothing if not agile companionship between the past and the present. Though Andorra is the product of Snaith's deft handling of quite modern equipment, the feeling of listening is more nostalgic than expectant. "Melody Day,"... more ›

Austinist Preview: The Elected, Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos, Whisper 2000 at Emo's Lounge

Those kids from Rilo Kiley seem to have more side projects than you could shake a side project shaking stick at. Among these non-Rilo Kiley ventures is Blake Sennett's (Rilo Kiley's guitarist/co-songwriter) band, the Elected. Somewhere between indie pop and alt country, the Elected feature genuine steel guitar and sweet harmonies just almost reminescent of 1960s film scores. They'll be serving up music to swoon to at Emo's Lounge tonight. more ›

Austinist Giveaway: Jenny Lewis at Stubb's Tonight

Austinist Giveaway: Jenny Lewis at Stubb's Tonight

While Jenny Lewis still has her day job in the form of Rilo Kiley, the singer/songwriter/crush magnet also released the solo disc Rabbit Fur Coat in early 2006. Rabbit is a low-key, gospel and soul influnced late-night record with ruminations on parents, God, and of course love, and features cameos from M. Ward and Conor Oberst. The album is a departure from Lewis' traditional indie-pop, and features bluegrass duo The Watson Twins to set a southern and haunting tone to the proceedings. Most of the record's attention was (perhaps unfairly) directed to the cover of the Traveling Wilburys "Handle With Care" featuring Ward, Oberst, and Ben Gibbard of Death Cab For Cutie, but that track doesn't really reflect the pretty but somber mood of the album. more ›

New Music Releases

The new year started off pretty slowly for music, with a few lackluster albums (The Strokes' third LP, Morningwood's bubblegum rock rehash) failing to excite, really, anyone. Not today. Cat Power's eagerly awaited follow-up to 2003's You Are Free comes out alongside the new Jenny Lewis (Rilo Kiley, The Postal Service) side project, Jenny Lewis with the Watson Twins and Richard Ashcroft's Keys to the World. Other notable bands include the unfortunately-named Test Icicles,... more ›

Feasting at the ACL Fest

Feasting at the ACL Fest

Burgers, pizza, burritos and pheasant quail andouille gumbo, you can get it all at the ACL music fest this weekend. Yes, if you happen to have a hankering for some Pheasant Quail Andouille Gumbo, then all you'll have to do is head over to the Prejean's booth (Number 14). God, what could be more excellent than that? Except maybe seeing the Arcade Fire live (plus Rilo Kiley, The Decemberists, and Franz Ferdinand all in... more ›

In One Ear

In One Ear

With ACL just a little over a week away, we've found ourselves spending quite a bit of time at work thinking about all the bands we can't wait to see during the day, and deciding which after-parties to attend.Second to the hot weather, the task of figuring out which acts to see - and, sometimes, which acts to avoid at all cost - is our biggest concern. Certainly, we've had our hearts set on... more ›

ACL Schedule Up!

ACL Schedule Up!

The 2005 ACL Festival Schedule was posted online yesterday, and for the most part it looks like they spaced the acts out pretty well. Though we'll still probably spend the next two months at work dreaming up dozens of band-hopping strategies, thus far we're pretty stoked to be able to see awesome acts like the Kaiser Chiefs, Bloc Party, Arcade Fire, and The Decemberists without having to forego another great band at the same... more ›

Oxymoronic Perfection a la Rilo Kiley

When we first heard Southern California-based Rilo Kiley's More Adventurous last fall, we were hooked almost immediately. Lead singer Jenny Lewis, also part of synthpop group The Postal Service, pens melancholic tales of heartache, betrayal, loss, and even the occasional social commentary, with the rest of the band supplying a sound that alternates between folk pop and surf rock.In our opinion, the lyrics are the driving force behind Rilo Kiley's success. The songs have... more ›
