Church of the Friendly Ghost presents Kendra Steiner Editions' Sixth Anniversary [Show Preview and Album Review]

This Sunday marks the return of San Antonio poet/spoken-word artist and label impresario Bill Shute and his Kendra Steiner Editions imprint to the Salvage Vanguard Theater. Two years ago, KSE launched a CD-R label to augment the already prolific chapbook series, focusing on an international coterie of experimental sound artists, composers and improvisers. Shute and his imprint have, over the past six years, garnered the respect of people like Byron Coley and Stuart Crutchfield - enough that these and other notable writers have been welcomed into the KSE stable. more ›

Toneburst 8 at Ceremony Hall [Saturday]

Toneburst 8 at Ceremony Hall [Saturday]

Austin has long been a hotbed of experimental music and artistic activity, though it rarely has gotten the press it deserved. That has, of course, changed somewhat with the greater visibility afforded to collectives like Church of the Friendly Ghost and it seems like every week something is bubbling up from the underground. Part of that long history can be traced to electronic artist Rick Reed, who has been a fixture on the Austin scene since 1978, as well as internationally - he, Scotsman Bill Thompson and Englishman Keith Rowe (both working in electronics and non-traditional guitar performance) toured Europe in 2009. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Toneburst 6

Arson may have damaged the studio that housed 91.7’s KOOP Radio, but they, and the Austin community at large, will be damned if they let the station go without a fight. Another benefit is happening this Saturday, presented by Church of the Friendly Ghost and Commercial Suicide, and taking the shape of Rick Reed’s 6th installment of the Toneburst series. Begun about two years ago, Toneburst is billed as “new and unusual experimental music from Austin and beyond...” and this will be its first show in The Salvage Vanguard Theater. more ›

Austin's Museum of Digital Art Presents Keith Rowe & Rick Reed

Keith Rowe has been astounding audiences for decades with his unusual style of free-form jazz guitar techniques inspired by early American jazz greats and other less likely influences such as Jackson Pollack and an old art instructor. Rowe took small steps over the years as a guitarist to attempt a completely individual approach to the instrument, embracing free jazz and various prepared guitar techniques (eg. a New Year's resolution to never tune his guitar... more ›
