Hump Day Encouragement: Augie Garrido Yells at You [NSFW, Video]
The Internet just reminded us of this classic scene from Richard Linklater's 2008 documentary Inning By Inning: A Portrait of a Coach, which followed University of Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido, the winningest coach in NCAA history. Above is a bit of the film that might inspire those of us going through Friday Night Lights withdrawals to make it through the rest of the work week. Enjoy, but beware: there's more curse words in there than a truck stop diner.

Film review: Some Came Running with Richard Linklater at the Alamo Downtown
Listening to Richard Linklater is fun. You probably know someone that speaks as he does: his phrases slow toward their ends, as if he's about to finish, but when he finds his next thought, he quickly picks up steam again, his sentences never really ending.

Linklater Serves Up a Big Plate of Truth (with a side of humor) to Colbert
For those of you who were out seeing the rock n’ roll or slamming Beaujolais Nouveau last night, you may have missed Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater on the Colbert Report. With his trademark ease, Linklater went toe-to-toe with the satirical newsman, discussing his new movie Fast Food Nation and explaining the evils of international mega food corps. and the harm they perpetuate vis-à-vis the environment and public health. Linklater, while funny, didn’t try too hard,...

Six Austin-Lensed Films Hitting Theatres This Fall
Despite Austin's population of just 700,000, there is no denying that we have become the regional hub for film and television production in the Southwest. In fact, no fewer than six films shot in Austin will hit screens between now and Thanksgiving. If you're curious about what those trucks near the Capitol building and at Texas Chili Parlor have been up to, or simply want to support locally made films with your movie dollars...
Art Opening: A Scanner Darkly Artists
It seems likely that many of you hold an academic interest in the rendering of Winona Ryder's bare, fruitful bosom by the team of artists who collaborated with Richard Linklater on his lauded animated release, A Scanner Darkly. If this accompanies a more overarching curiosity about the artistic process and a desire to see original sketches and prints by the same illustrators, you might wanna motorscooter over to the AAVA tonight for the opening of...

Elsewhere in the Ist-averse
Torontoist immediately wins our heart by using the word "Jackass" in a headline. In fact, we love their use of it so much that we're going to use it as much as possible throughout this post. For example, it looks like there are Toronto-area jackasses besides those who misuse the sidewalk: look at the crap on sale on Toronto's craigslist. But it looks like Toronto doesn't contain the kind of jackasses who pee in public...
Austinist Reviews A Scanner Darkly
“Drug use, some might say, is destroying this country. And we have laws against selling drugs, pushing drugs, using drugs, importing drugs...And so if people are violating the law by doing drugs, they ought to be accused and they ought to be convicted and they ought to be sent up.” - Rush Limbaugh, October 5th 1995 Adapted by Austinite Richard Linklater from Philip K. Dick’s 1977 novel, A Scanner Darkly is the story of...
A Scanner Darkly, A Step Above
On Wednesday night, The Austin Film Society hosted a little over one thousand friends to watch Austin's very own premiere of A Scanner Darkly at the Paramount Theatre, with a post-screen party down the street at The Austin Museum of Art. Originally written by Philip K. Dick in the late 1970’s and adapted to the screen by Austin's own Richard Linklater, A Scanner Darkly is an eerie, yet hilarious, film of drugs, paranoia and...
Screenings: I Am a Sex Addict at the Dobie
We know a good movie title when we read one. Just knowing that I Am A Sex Addict is meant in the driest, deadliest-of-deadpan, classic-Woody-Allen humor in every respect makes the draw that much more irresistible. Almost an. . .addiction, we might say. In a wonderfully original approach to autobiography, Caveh Zahedi's film weaves documentary, re-enactment narrative, behind-the-scenes glimpses and animation to create an unflinching look at his penchant for sex with prostitutes and his...
Linklater Dishes to the Onion
Filmmaker, AFS founder, and diehard Austinite Richard Linklater was in Cannes last month to present A Scanner Darkly, the rotoscoped film adaptation of Philip K Dick's dystopic novel, and Fast Food Nation, based on Eric Schlosser's expose on the fast food industry. At the same time, the Criterion Collection -- famous for its fabulous reissues of landmark films from the likes of Fellini, Kubrick, Godard, and Lang -- released a special edition of Dazed and...

Julie + Ethan + Richard + Paris = “Ooh La La”
There aren’t many movies made that can have a sequel a decade later and have the second offer stand-up to the original (much less a story about love and relationships). Off the tippy-top of our heads, we can think of Le Déclin de L'empire Américain /Les Invasions Barbares. But Austin filmmaker Richard Linklater did just that with the two beautiful films, Before Sunrise & Before Sunset. The two movies represent some of the best romantic realism we have ever seen on film. And, of course, they remind us of living in Europe, hastily jumping on overnight trains bound for Paris, if only to spend just 12 more hours with the woman with whom we were certain we'd spend the rest of our lives. Or passing strangers along the Seine, making the briefest of eye contact and then spending the next four hours wistfully concocting our life’s greatest love story.
Austin Film Society's Gonna Party Like It's 1985
