Food + Drink: El Greco Closes Before "Kitchen Nightmare" Episode Airs

On Friday, January 20th, FOX viewers of "Kitchen Nightmares" can watch celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay visit the West Campus area in an attempt to modernize and save El Greco, the sometimes lauded but long-troubled Greek restaurant near UT. There's one problem, though: El Greco appears to have already shut their doors for good. Their Facebook page has not been updated since December 16th with a post on gift certificates available for the holidays, though there have been a few unanswered inquiries on the page regarding the restaurant’s evident closing. According to The Examiner, the taverna has been closed since mid-December: more ›

The Highball, Alamo Drafthouse's Newest Brainchild, Is Almost Ready for Its Big Debut

Pretty much anything that Tim and Karrie League touch turns to gold, which is why we couldn't be more excited about the progress of their newest bowling alley/restaurant/dancehall/karaoke explosion, The Highball. We've been montitoring the construction over on The Highball blog, and are incredibly excited by the promise that it will be ready for lounging come next weekend, when Fantastic Fest 2009 rips through the Alamo South Lamar. Not only will The Highball offer food and merryment, but it will also offer a place to hang out before any film that you go see, which, if you've ever waited in one of those epic-opening-night lines, you know how welcome this addition to the Drafthouse family will be. more ›

Austin Bites: Swad

Austin Bites: Swad

Do not, repeat, do not go to Swad expecting saag paneer or chicken tikka masala, lest you turn into one of those people who posts irrationally angry reviews on Yelp. Swad's serves southern Indian/Pakistani food, which is totally different, lighter (to a point), and completely vegetarian. Best that you wipe all previous northern Indian dining experiences off your hard drive before venturing Swad's way. more ›

Austin Bites: mulberry

Austin Bites: mulberry

In spite of its bias against capital letters, mulberry is a wine bar that doesn’t suck. Located on the ground floor of the spankin’ new 360 Condominiums on a dead end street across from the Austin Music Hall, its inconspicuous location won’t lend itself to being discovered merely in passing. more ›

Austin Bites: Imperia

Austin Bites: Imperia

The Spaghetti Warehouse district recently got a little bit more upscale. Imperia is a relatively new restaurant where upper thirty-something urban professionals congregate at the bar to sip on candy-sweet cocktails and ease the pain of their oncoming early-mid-life crises. Austin eaters spread themselves out amongst the multiple, sprawling dining rooms, searching for a spark of modern Asian inspiration. more ›

Austin Bites: Somnio's Cafe

Austin Bites: Somnio's Cafe

There's a new restaurant on South 1st St., and odds are good that locals may have passed it by without noticing. In spite of the entire front wall boldly displaying its name, Somnio's Cafe occupies what might be a cursed location: recessed from the street with a windowless facade, nearly invisible in the enormous, crowd-pleasing shadows of Freddie's and Polvo's. more ›

Eat for a Cause Tonight at Aster's

Eat for a Cause Tonight at Aster's

If you haven’t headed over to Aster’s Ethiopian Restaurant, a small, vivid gem set on the tarnished strip of I-35 just north of Dean Keeton, think of this as an opportunity with your name on it. The hospitable folks at Aster’s are designating a night of sales to their longtime friend Lawrence Eguakun of World Beat Café notoriety, who was diagnosed with cancer one year ago and has been undergoing intensive treatment since. more ›

AFF Wraps Up Tonight!

After a fantastic week of panels, parties and screenings, the Austin Film Festival will wrap up tonight with a screening of Sidney Lumet's highly anticipated Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. Lumet (the man behind films like Running on Empty, Serpico, and one of our favorite movies ever, Dog Day Afternoon) directs an unbelievably great cast including Albert Finney, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei and Philip Seymour Hoffman in this caper-gone-wrong thriller. We haven't had the... more ›

Flute sounds, wood blocks, glockenspiel and plenty of tambourine along with conventional rock elements create a sound that’s minimal yet layered. In Camera is not only... more ›

2nd Annual Asia Food Fest This Weekend

2nd Annual Asia Food Fest This Weekend

Not to gush, but Satay Restaurant owner Dr. Foo Swasdee is simply the kind of person from whom our politicians and business leaders could learn a thing or twelve - especially in the selfless and admirable departments. After the 2004 tsunami, she returned to her native Thailand to assist in disaster relief efforts, and after returning to Austin continues to throw her muscle behind Thai Tsunami Orphanage. The Texas Asian Chamber of Commerce and Texas... more ›

What the Flock? Veggie Vandal Vitctimizes Victual Venues

Dale Rice over at the Statesman is reporting that a rash of vandalism has erupted among downtown restaurants because they serve foies gras, the pate made from the liver of geese who are force-fed. The vandalized restaurants comprise Aquarelle, Eddie V's Edgewater Grille, Fleming's, Restaurant Jezebel, Ruth's Chris Steak House, the Spaghetti Warehouse and Truluck's. Apparently, what's getting the restaurants' collective geese are obscenities spray-painted on their signs and doors. photo by cappellmeister on... more ›
