"Try to Minimize the Assholishness": An Interview with Reggie Watts
Comedian, beatboxer, performance artist, singer, pop culture encyclopedia: Reggie Watts is all of these things at once, which probably explains how he's managed to be a hit with the mainstream comedy crowd and NPR audiences and the experimental art world. Last week, he caught up on the phone with Austinist about his love of John Hughes movies and strong female singers, and he shared his thoughts on the Occupy Wall Street movement, and his dream production space.
Getting Pretty Fond of Fx3 [Fun Fun Fun Fest Memory]
Somehow I overlooked the first couple of years of Fx3 as a transplant to Austin still elated and overwhelmed by the plethora of accessible live music available on the regular. But in 2009, I scored a cozy introduction manning a booth at the fest for a few hours one day in exchange for a weekend wristband. Why not, right? I had no idea what to expect and found myself pleasantly surprised by the laid back scene - not too crowded, manageable lines for beer/food, and a good mix of fans. I have since happily resigned any interest I once had in attending ACL for a yearly fling with Fun Fun Fun. And while I adore the excitement and unparalleled buzz SXSW generates, the intimacy of Fx3 has made it my favorite of Austin’s fests.
Beat Boxing and Make Believe: Reggie Watts at The ND [Review]
For those unfamiliar with Reggie Watts, explaining his performances probably confuses more than clarifies. Watts is a comedian, musician, beat-boxer and improviser; his sets blend his intelligence and technical skill into a series of free-associative digressions. He has performed and toured with multiple bands (from Regina Spektor to LCD Soundsystem) and is active in experimental theater, but his current focus is on performing comedy solo. He's been touring extensively since last year's opening slot on Conan O'Brien's highly acclaimed tour, and his shows this past weekend at The ND Studios (as part of Fusebox Festival) were standard among Watts performances, which is to say they were remarkable.
Art Outside Interview: Reggie Watts
Performing this Friday night at Art Outside 2009 is Reggie Watts with his unique blend of musical comedy. Reggie has produced numerous broadband original comedy series for ComedyCentral.com, Superdeluxe.com, IFC.com, and Vimeo. The "Supercomedian" has performed at arts festivals across the country as well as overseas for delighted comedy and music fans alike.
Austinist Interviews Ron Berry
Ron Berry has been having a mighty fine time of things lately. Last year's Fuse Box Festival was critically and commercially successful. Refraction Arts' production of The Assumption was so popular, they resurrected it late last year to sold out houses. The company garnered a whopping 24 Critics Table Awards in '07. To top it all off, in its most ambitious year to date, Fuse Box '08 kicks off in less than two weeks. We recently chatted with Ron about Fuse Box to get the scoop on this year's fest.
