Austinist Show Preview: Belaire Explode, Impact Tonight @ Emo's

After an incredibly (too) long hiatus, the lovable local kaleidoscopic synth pop band Belaire return with a brand new album titled Exploding, Impacting, despite the non-stop touring schedule of members Jason Chronis and Matt Simon (thanks to a little side project they have called Voxtrot) and twin sister (and singing partner) Christa Palazzolo now living in New York City. The album is a tour de force of Cari Palazzolo, who, with this release, has emerged... more ›

Garage Rock for Geeks: Austinist <3s White Denim

Garage Rock for Geeks: Austinist <3s White Denim

White Denim are sort of an anomaly in Austin: they aren't iPod dance-rock, they don't have a gimmick, and they haven't been consumed by the scene's self-conscious rock elite. They seem to be making it based on the purest of rock 'n roll fantasies: a live show that makes people turn around and smile at each other, and songs which catalyze that in more ways than one. But describing their sound can be difficult.... more ›

Austinist Interviews Stem and Leaf Records

Austinist Interviews Stem and Leaf Records

Marshall Escamilla and Emily Summerfield are the dynamic duo behind Stem and Leaf Records, Austin's latest indie record label that launched during SXSW Interactive earlier this year. This weekend, they're throwing a CD release show for The Interest Kills at the historic Victory Grill, with Happy Families, The Total Foxes, and Red Leaves ... and a spelling bee! We had a chat with Emily and Marshall this week, in advance of the show. Read on! So where'd you guys get the idea to start a record label? E: Well, one day I was talking to Marshall on the phone (this was when I was still living in Indiana), and he asked if I would like to start a record label. So there's that, but of course, there's more to it that just that. I love music but don't play any instruments, so I've always sort of secretly wanted to do something like this. M: I got the idea when I was watching a friend of mine play a show in Chicago while we were on tour. She was doing this really great stuff, and I knew that she wouldn't do much to support it. So I thought, "Man, I should start a label just to help her get her music out there." And then, my band came up with the idea to write a Zombie Rock Opera, and I felt like we needed to do something to get it the support it needed. So we started a label. And what are your backgrounds? E: We're both English majors. Marshall teaches, and most of my work experience has been in libraries. M: Yup. more ›
