Hard Proof Afrobeat, Hundred Visions and More at Red 7 [Free Week Show Preview]

Free Week in Austin tends to lean towards the garagey-est of Red River bands, but tonight’s showcase at Red 7 marches to a different beat. Make that a few different beats: the Austinist’s own Adi Anand and Austin Music Weekly present a bill that features a number of local up-and-comers while spanning the globe musically. more ›

The Black Dhalia Murder, Cannabis Corpse, More at Red 7 [Preview]

Described by one YouTube user as "Melodic-death-core-new age-thrash-core-zombie-core-STFU-core," Michigan band The Black Dhalia Murder flirt with technical and tough metal as they quietly ingrain themselves into at least a sliver of public consciousness - their last album, Deflorate, cracked the Billboard top 50, and their new album Ritual reached up to #31. Still running a victory lap from that album release this summer, the band are hitting Austin with heavy support. more ›

Backbeat Magazine Block Party [Show Preview]

Our sometimes-sister city San Antonio often gets the short end of the stick when it comes to music coverage, but it’s recently shown signs of life. Backbeat Magazine was founded to rectify this oversight, highlighting an emerging scene that’s making a stand in the Alamo City, a la William B. Travis et al. Now, Backbeat’s spreading their reach up I-35 with an ATX office that’s making a big summer splash this weekend with a massive block party on 7th Street. more ›

Young Widows at Red 7 [Show Preview]

Evan Patterson, Geoff Paton, and Nick Thieneman formed Young Widows in 2006; previously, the trio had been an integral part of hardcore outfit Breather Resist. When singer Steve Sindoni quit Breather Resist, they soldiered on initially under the same moniker but eventually changed the name prior to the release of their debut record Settle Down City. By 2008, drummer Paton had been replaced by Jeremy McMonigle, and in September of the same year the band dropped the impressive Old Wounds full-length. more ›

Acrassicauda [Show Preview]

TTonight, Acrassicauda, the ultra-dedicated Iraqi heavy metal band, slams into Red Seven. They braved a harrowing journey prior to settling in the United States and recording their impressive EP, Only the Dead See the End of the War (2010). Very few, if any, bands have lived for music like Acrassicauda. They played shows amidst the firefights and missile strikes (one of which destroyed their practice space in Baghdad), during the worst years of the US led war in Iraq, and fled to Syria and Turkey prior to being granted refugee status by the United States. Their early years in Iraq and Syria are documented in the outstanding film, Heavy Metal in Baghdad. There’s a lot to do tonight; if early Metallica, Slayer and Black Flag float your boat, this show is definitely for you. more ›

A swell time was had by all. more ›

The Worst Tattoo In Austin Contest - Interview with Founder Devon Tincknell

"What we're looking for is more indefensively bad tattoos in the hilarious sense - something that is just so regretted or so f-d up that it's going to keep the person from ever getting a normal job. We want to award those people for making such horribly great decisions." more ›

Living in Dreams: An Interview with Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing

Living in Dreams: An Interview with Jack Tatum of Wild Nothing

Late in the summer of 2009, a shimmering, synthy cover of the Kate Bush song "Cloudbusting" by a then-unknown bedroom project called Wild Nothing hit the internet, garnering a bit of buzz for the one-man band of Blacksburg, Virginia resident Jack Tatum. A debut LP, Gemini, followed a few months later, full of lush, handcrafted guitar melodies that gaze fondly backward at the dreamy indie pop coming out of the U.K. in the 1980s. Now Tatum and his live band are taking that record and its follow-up, the Golden Haze EP, on the road; they'll play in Austin on Friday night at Red 7. We gave Jack a call to discuss recording in one's bedroom, the difficulties of re-learning one's own songs, and the '80s. more ›

No Age @ Red 7 [Show Preview]

No Age @ Red 7 [Show Preview]

There are more hipster indie rockers these days than there are Republicans in Texas government, and in that context it seems like No Age is just another band for Pitchfork to champion and the bearded and bespectacled to admire. But the Los Angeles duo’s lo-fi take on '80s college rock (its name comes from a compilation on the venerable SST label) and knuckles-to-the-grindstone work ethic boost it several notches up the (genuinely) cool scale. more ›

Doomtree at Red 7 [Show Preview and Interview]

"There's no love like crew love / and that's true 'cuz to me / my friends are my family / my clan is Doomtree," Dessa sings of her labelmates on "Crew", from this year's A Badly Broken Code, and the Doomtree collective is spreading that love to Austin tonight. The crew—which includes singer/emcee Dessa, punk rapper P.O.S., and "super producer" Lazerbeak—rarely ventures as a unit for a full-posse show outside of its Minneapolis hometown, but all seven members will take the Red 7 stage tonight, along with the group's unaffiliated BFF (and P.O.S. collaborator), Seattle's Astronautilus. In advance of the show, Austinist caught up with Dessa and Lazerbeak to find out if there's really no love like crew love. more ›

Atari Teenage Riot at Red 7 [Preview]

By the time that the Beastie Boys picked up American distribution for a number of titles on Atari Teenage Riot's Digital Hardcore label in 1996, they were already stirring up their fair share of controversy back home in Germany. The release of the Deutschland Has Gotta Die! 7" on Grand Royal started earning the group some strong awareness in the United States (especially on the college radio scene) and found them being invited to go on tour with artists like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion and Beck, where they likely puzzled the majority of the unsuspecting audience members. more ›

Preview: Questlove / Sammy Bananas [Red 7 / Beauty Bar Tonight]

This Tuesday, KR hosts a unique block party of sorts down on Seventh Street. Head over to Beauty Bar for THE ZOO, an afterparty for the Chromeo show (at Stubb’s) featuring the hilariously named Sammy Bananas, along with locals Hoodie Allen and Prepmode. You can get into this dance-a-thon for $3 with a Stubb’s wristband, or $5 if you plan to skip the Chromeo show. Or you can go for free with your ticket stub from the Questlove DJ Set right next door at Red 7. You may not be able to pry your way into his band’s ACL taping, but that’s no reason to completely miss out on some Roots action this evening. more ›

HEALTH, Indian Jewelry, More [Show Preview]

Red 7 has booked a generous bill for this Saturday for any listener who loves their noise. Beginning at nine-thirty, we have Computer Jesus Refrigerator playing a short 15 minute set on the floor. The insane-sounding San Antonio band specialize in short, painful bursts of sound, created from drums, synths and odd, not easily-identifiable instruments. Our own Daniel Francis Doyle follows with a twenty minute set. What Doyle lacks in glitch or extreme sounds is more than made up for his one-man exuberance and unmistakable aesthetic. more ›

KARP Lives! Fundraiser and Show

KARP Lives! Fundraiser and Show

Twenty years ago, three misfits in the Washington town of Tumwater formed what would eventually become the influential and heavy as hell band KARP (Kill All Redneck Pricks). Combining adolescent frustration with a love for punk and metal, the band went on to release three albums on the K Records label but broke up in 1998. more ›

Weekend Music Preview: Red Sparowes @ Red 7 [Friday]

Weekend Music Preview: Red Sparowes @ Red 7 [Friday]

Headliners Red Sparowes hail from Los Angeles and were in Austin as recently as last November, performing at the beloved Fun Fun Fun Fest. Sometimes considered a side-project, an erroneous detail refuted during our pre-Fun Fest interview with members of the band, Red Sparowes is comprised of respected veterans such as Bryan Clifford Meyer (Isis), Greg Burns (Halifax Pier), Dave Clifford (Pleasure Forever), and Andy Arahood (Angel Hair). Meyer’s fellow Isis band mate Jeff Caxide and Neurosis’ Josh Graham were both a part of the original lineup as well; guitarist Emma Ruth Randle joined the band last year following Graham’s exit. Red Sparowes’ two full-lengths adroitly package controlled chaos into stirring doses of euphoric rock. The band’s third LP is due next Tuesday so expect plenty of new material this evening at Red 7. more ›

Free Week Highlight: La Snacks & More @ Red 7 [Wednesday]

Free Week Highlight: La Snacks & More @ Red 7 [Wednesday]

Austin is obviously the top music oasis in Texas but towns like Denton and El Paso are normally included in that discussion. Lately, a little city east of Houston has been throwing its name in the hat as well. Beaumont, a part of the Golden Triangle (which spawned UGK), has given us Ringo Deathstarr already and is home to the Connect The Dots Festival. And then there’s this band called La Snacks that has been making some noise on both sides of I-45. more ›

Preview: Black Cock @ Red 7 [Friday]

Preview: Black Cock @ Red 7 [Friday]

We’ve been enjoying the live videos from Fun Fun Fun Fest nightly but as enticing as it sounds, repeated viewings of this priceless performance by The Jesus Lizard or this epic Les Savy Fav clip at home shouldn’t be a part of anyone’s Friday evening agenda. Especially since Red 7 is hosting a handful of top-notch local rock acts that will surely expunge any lingering post-Fun Fest lethargy. But be warned, the sounds resonating from the venue this night are not for the weak of heart. Eagle Claw bring the thunder early on with an ample supply of sizzling guitar licks, Woodgrain’s chiming experiments continue the sonic onslaught, and the always impressive Tia Carrera bludgeon through lengthy doses of psych-metal in the penultimate slot. Black Cock’s thumping electro-rock brings down the curtain on this exceptional noise-laden bill, adding some vocals to all the racket along the way. Chock-full of resonating keys and immaculately layered vocals, the band’s debut full-length Robot Child With A God spawns ominous soundscapes that might not usher in the end of days just yet but are disconcerting enough to imply impending doom and darkness. We chatted with Black Cock’s ringleader Chico Jones earlier this week to learn more about the band’s recording process, and their hopes and dreams. more ›
