The City of Austin wants your input in naming the new 21-acre, $7.3-mililon park just south of Lady Bird Lake. The recently opened area, which houses the Palmer Events Center and the Long Center, is currently dubbed "Town Lake Park," but a "facilities naming ordinance" calls for the park to be rechristened in honor of "an individual(s) (living or dead) or something other than an individual such as a place or natural feature." Thanks to yesterday's freak thunderstorms and subsequent flooding, Barton Springs Pool is again closed. Barring another Barton Creek flood, the pool should reopen on Thursday, though we wouldn't bet on it: Austin's extended forecast shows scattered thunderstorms for at least 9 out of the next 10 days. In the meantime, Austin Parks and Recreation Department is keeping Deep Eddy Pool open for extended hours, from 6am-9pm daily. Admission is free between 6am-8am. Photo of Barton...

The nasty gap in the Town Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail on either side of I-35 on the south side of the lake may finally be closed. The circle squared. The Odyssey completed. Just like we wanted! The Parks and Recreation Department and the Town Lake Trail Foundation have obtained a $250,000 pledge from Constellation Property Group, which is building the "Star Riverside" condos nearby. But not anymore, if Capital Sports and Entertainment (CSE) and its massive coffers have anything to say about it. Perhaps...

We've only ever had fake plastic trees for Christmas - which, invariably, stay up till August - but those of you with giant pinetrees rotting away in your living rooms might consider dropping them off at Zilker Park. Come mid-January, they'll be recycling the lot and grinding them into mulch, which you can then get ahold of for free. But exercise some caution when handling the fetid fertilizers, says the City of Austin:

Tonight marks the start of yet another free outdoor film series, this time over on the east side at Kealing Park. Brought to you by the Parks and Recreation Department, Austin Film Society, and the East Village Alliance, Summer Movies and Music in the Park screens every other Wednesday through August 3rd.

With the 90+ degree days here and scores more to follow, we at the Austinist are beginning to gravitate towards the many watering holes in and around Austin . And with Memorial Day this weekend, so starts the “summer season,” as defined by the Austin Parks and Recreation Department. As you are probably abundantly aware, adult access to Barton Springs costs $3 a day. However, for those of you who, like us, take every...
