The City of Austin wants your input in naming the new 21-acre, $7.3-mililon park just south of Lady Bird Lake. The recently opened area, which houses the Palmer Events Center and the Long Center, is currently dubbed "Town Lake Park," but a "facilities naming ordinance" calls for the park to be rechristened in honor of "an individual(s) (living or dead) or something other than an individual such as a place or natural feature." Submit your......

Next week, the City of Austin will officially unveil Town Lake Park, the latest chunk of land to join the already expansive family of city parks. Austin Parks and Recreation are responsible for some 206 parks, 26 greenbelts and 12 nature preserves, totaling a whopping 16,682 acres. Add 20 acres to that total on August 29, when the city officially celebrates the opening of Town Lake Park. Where is this all coming from, you ask?......

Thanks to yesterday's freak thunderstorms and subsequent flooding, Barton Springs Pool is again closed. Barring another Barton Creek flood, the pool should reopen on Thursday, though we wouldn't bet on it: Austin's extended forecast shows scattered thunderstorms for at least 9 out of the next 10 days. In the meantime, Austin Parks and Recreation Department is keeping Deep Eddy Pool open for extended hours, from 6am-9pm daily. Admission is free between 6am-8am. Photo of Barton......

We're big fans of universal accessibility and all, but we were a little confused when we saw this bit in today's edition of PopBitch: A proposed new law in Texas would permit blind people to go hunting with guns. Needless to say, we immediately surfed over to BillHop.com to see what this could possibly be about, but came up empty. BBC News turned out to have the full scoop. Representative Edmund Kuempel (R-Seguin), vice chair......

Continuing our look at the bonds up for vote in this election cycle. . . Proposition Three in ballot language:“The issuance of $84,700,000 in tax supported General Obligation Bonds and Notes for constructing, renovating, improving and equipping public parks, recreation centers, natural areas, and other related facilities, including, without limitation, playgrounds, hike and bike trails, sports courts, and swimming pools; and acquiring land and interests in land and property necessary to do so; and......

The nasty gap in the Town Lake Hike-and-Bike Trail on either side of I-35 on the south side of the lake may finally be closed. The circle squared. The Odyssey completed. Just like we wanted! The Parks and Recreation Department and the Town Lake Trail Foundation have obtained a $250,000 pledge from Constellation Property Group, which is building the "Star Riverside" condos nearby. A suggestion: hit up Cypress Real Estate Advisors for another big......

We don't know about you, but when we stand naked in front of the mirror sometimes, our tan lines are so distinct that... well, it kinda looks like we're still wearing our skivvies. In resolution to solve our little dilemma, we decided to go ahead and celebrate the tail-end of Nude Recreation Week by going to Hippie Hollow. Hey, we just want to look good naked. If you were awake at all, you know......

July is a patriotic month in America, and with it unavoidably comes the usual rhetoric about “freedom” and “liberty.” But when confronted with such blathering, many of us are forced to ask ourselves: Are we actually free? Are we truly enjoying the sumptuous fruits of liberty that our forefathers and foremothers sought when they came to the New World in the first place? Can we just take off our pants whenever, and it’s cool?......

Ok, not so much "secret" as "we hadn't heard about it yet." Also, "revealed" isn't really accurate. Anyway, the city and Travis County are talking again about building a tunnel under Waller Creek. This proposal was last seriously considered in 2003 and has been kicking around since a bond proposal for its funding passed in 1998. Flooding is a big problem and now, with the global warming, these hundred-year floods are happening, like, a......

Like most attendees, our biggest frustration with last year's Austin City Limits Festival was the wretched dust cloud blanketing Zilker Park after the first day. With tens of thousands of people milling about and the daytime highs between 98-107 degrees, everything was worsened by the fact that the park was already suffering from drought-like conditions. But not anymore, if Capital Sports and Entertainment (CSE) and its massive coffers have anything to say about it. Perhaps......

We've only ever had fake plastic trees for Christmas - which, invariably, stay up till August - but those of you with giant pinetrees rotting away in your living rooms might consider dropping them off at Zilker Park. Come mid-January, they'll be recycling the lot and grinding them into mulch, which you can then get ahold of for free. But exercise some caution when handling the fetid fertilizers, says the City of Austin: Christmas......

Luminarias at the Hancock Golf Course, Dec. 10 Austinist was lucky enough to forget our keys at the basketball court that adjoins the Hancock Golf Course, located at the corner of Red River and 42nd. This post is by one of our new writers, Elizabeth... Next Saturday, Sunday, October 22, Austin will hold its annual Stand Down to help the homeless.
