With all the events, after-shows, parties, and spontaneous outdoor dance parties surrounding ACL weekend, you’d be forgiven for overlooking some of the festival’s incredible (official or not) ancillary events. This is not one of those events to overlook. If you only make it to one show outside of the festival this year, Rare Magazine and WOXY, Austin’s newest internet radio station (which is already endearing itself quite nicely to our community), have made a strong case for this being the one to hit. Of course, we’re referring to the rechristening of the decommissioned Seaholm Power Plant as a live music venue, with none other than the ensemble cast of Toronto’s Broken Social Scene shattering the bottle of champagne on the art-deco columns (figuratively for sure, literally, maybe).

Austin Restaurant Week is back, and bigger than ever. The semi-annual citywide event, put on by the new crew at Rare magazine, affords Austinites a chance to try out special $25 and $35 prix fixe menus at over fifty upscale eateries. Participating restaurants include relative newcomers like Perla's, Sushi Zushi, and Frank, plus classic Austin institutions such as Hudson’s on the Bend and Jeffrey's.

The resultant fallout has been a spectacular example of marketing gone horribly wrong. Commenters on the Do512 RSVP page have all but declared war against the pale lager and its associated firms. A newly-created Facebook page entitled "Dos SuXX" has just under 200 members. And, in a perhaps overstated gesture, someone's even suggested launching a class action lawsuit.

Like the publishing industry as a whole, Austin's Rare Magazine has been undergoing a metamorphosis of late, which ostensibly began with the departure of former Publisher and Founder Matt Swinney earlier this year. The magazine's co-owner, Taylor Perkins, who runs local real estate firm 512 Realty and serves as Development Director for Charity Bash, a fledgling philanthropy group, then bought out his business partner's share, becoming sole owner of Rare and assuming the Publisher title.

Last night, Rare Magazine celebrated at the Long Center with local bands, food and beverages from local vendors, and fireworks. Harlem, White Denim and Grupo Fantasma were on hand, as well as DJ Manny. All photos courtesy Pooneh Ghana.

Rare Magazine’s “Rarest of Them All” Awards [Preview]

Rare Magazine’s 2nd annual “Rarest of Them All” awards will be held this Wednesday, June 3rd at the Long Center for the Performing Arts, from 6-10 p.m. The “Rarest of them All” issue, on stands now, highlights Austin’s favorite local businesses and people. The awards ceremony for the winners will be brimming with complimentary booze, food, music, and even fireworks after dark hosted by Wolf Stuntworks. In addition to performances by DJ Manny, Harlem, White Denim and headliner Grupo Fantasma, local reader’s choice vendors will host interactive booths to keep everyone entertained and out of trouble.

All week long, Austinist is giving away tickets and guestlist spots to some of the hottest private, unofficial parties taking place during the annual SXSW Festival. Contests will be posted throughout the day and run for a few hours apiece, so check back frequently for your best chance to win.

You may have gotten an email requesting that you PLEASE HELP SAVE THE MEAN EYED CAT! Alack and alas, you may have thought, another Austin institution is falling prey to evil condo developers! Those bastards! Not quite. The Mean Eyed Cat was spared in the development of 5th Street Commons (which did not spare Austin Furniture Consignment or Pok-E-Jo's, although Pok-E-Jo's may get space in the new development). However, as a result of the...

An annual showcase and celebration of all things DIY, the Stitch Fashion Show and Guerrilla Craft Bazaar returns for its fourth installment this Saturday with an even bigger and better lineup. Back in 2003, local designers Jesse Kelly-Landes (Amet and Sasha), Tina Sparkles (Sparkle Craft), Karly Hand (Identity Crisis Clothing) and Jennifer Perkins (Naughty Secretary Club), dismayed that Austin lacked an effective outlet for independent designers to exhibit their work, orchestrated one of the city's...
