Tim Gunn is lovely. Even more so for being an out-of-sync gentleman in an industry full of people whose lives are like the Vietnam Memorial: flat, black surfaces inscribed with a casualty list. Never has the Macy’s courtyard, nestled between Popcornopolis and Oakley, had such fireside intimacy. Gunn stopped by while touring to promote Lucky Brand by doing a scaled down community theater version of a fashion show followed by a generously lengthy Q&A.

Project Runway All Stars Is Perhaps A Few Feet Short For Flight
Only in the world of reality television could the phrase "All Stars" mean "previous losers". The producers for Project Runway All Stars did a solid job of stitching together fan favorites with reliable basket cases like Austin Scarlett, who hails straight from Andy Warhol's island of lost toys. It's not the greatest designer hits of seasons passed where All Stars fails most, but in the awkward wreck of the catwalk judiciary.
Fashion Week Interview: Johnathan Kayne Dresses Up Austin Fashion Week
Project Runway alum and designer Johnathan Kayne Gillaspie will be presenting new pieces from his eveningwear collection at the Austin Fashion Awards this Sunday, July 19th at the Long Center. Johnathan Kayne dares to take high design where there’s a major style void in the industry - the heavily embellished pageant and prom scene. Gillaspie won a Project Runway challenge by designing a gown for then Miss America, the infamous Tara Conner, which she then donned at the Miss Universe pageant.
In preparation for the Austin Fashion Awards, we were able to pick the pageant prince’s brain, and we got fashion philosophical about his background and bling.

Austinites at NY Fashion Week, and What Riverboat Gamblers and Fashion Have in Common
New York Fashion Week didn't come without a little bit of Austin, Texas in it. From the kooky Elisa Jimenez to the classy Cat Swanson, Austinites were making headlines. // Past Project Runway winner Chloe Dao will be visiting Austin this week representing Asian-Americans in business. // This weekend, the Riverboat Gamblers' lead singer will take a break from crowd surfing and screaming to host a fashion show featuring local vintage boutiques.
Austinite Gets The Boot On Project Runway
Her hand-sewn, saliva-marked, grass-stained outfits were reality show ratings gold, but after six episodes former Austinite and University of Texas graduate Elisa Jimenez took the dive on last night's episode of Bravo's Project Runway.
Last Week in the -IST Network
In Los Angeles, LAist most definitely celebrated Thanksgiving like no other. After all, one has to keep up all the energy to keep on walking the line at the Writers Strike and fighting the unfortunate return of the wildfires in Malibu, which single handedly destroyed over fifty homes within the first 24 hours. National outlets may be covering the fires, but CNN also found it is easier to buy a gun than fruit and...
Project Runway @ Moxie Continues
We haven't made it to Project Runway at Moxie and the Compound, yet, but we've heard it's fun. Last week's winner Malissa Long sent us a picture of her creation (see right); the challenge was to design a piece only using a white knit fabric. This week the challenge is to design a dress for the Shiki customer. The Moxie version of Project Runway is similar to the Bravo show, although there's a local twist...
Fashion Bits!
We are pleasantly surprised to hear that former UT alum Elisa Jimenez is a contestant for the upcoming season of Bravo’s Project Runway. We chatted up this uber-creative lady earlier this year at an in-store fashion-show/performance during SXSW at Factory People, where she sold several hand-stitched jersey dresses and tops. Trained as a sculptor and with a background in making large-scale marionettes, Elisa became an “accidental" fashion designer after someone discovered her at a...
Call For Artists: Swap-O-Rama-Rama
One of the big components of next month's Maker Faire Austin festival is the Swap-O-Rama-Rama, an enormous clothing swap and DIY workshop series. Through the recycling and repurposing of used clothing, Swap-O-Rama-Rama seeks to explore the benefits of community reuse and creativity. During the festival, you'll be able to bring your own bag of unwanted clothing to be added to the collective pile; in turn, you're invited to take away as much as you'd like....
Fashion Bits: Austin Gets Creative
Moxie and the Compound wants to wet your fashion whistle with its own Project Runway-inspired competition. Both Marques Harper and Stephen Moser mentioned they're judging the event. But who do you think promoted it better? Remember Factory People, the hip store on South Congress that closed this summer? Of course you do! They're still around, promoting parties and selling their shamelessly cool clothing online. But if you want to see Factory People's latest looks...
Fashion Bits (Bigger Bits)
Peyton’s Place is celebrating its grand opening tonight from 6 to 9 p.m. There will be complimentary drinks, in-store makeovers (courtesy of Sage Salon), and a trunk show by jewelry designer Joani White. Peyton’s Place is on 215 Lavaca. Re- is going out of business! Voted Best Recycled Goods by Austin Chronicle, this little South Austin vintage store is calling it quits after over two years. Owner Chris Walker said he and his wife...
Fashion Live! Celebrates Macy's Opening at The Domain
We went back to The Domain, Austin’s new consumer wet-dream, to attend "Fashion Live!" The, err, creatively named fashion show was a marketing campaign celebrating the Macy’s opening. How could we resist? The host was Michael Knight, a “fan favorite” designer on Bravo’s Project Runway.
Fashion Bits!
- The two most anticipated openings for stylish Austinites are the new By George at Cissis’ Market, opening March 1, and Neiman Marcus at The Domain, opening on March 9th. Michael Knight, former Project Runway star, and Robert Verdi, host of E!'s Fashion Police, are participating in a couple of The Domain’s opening events.
- Women’s boutique Plume is having a closing sale until the end of the month. Pick up silky tops, jersey dresses and Japanese-made jeans before they fly off the shelves.

News Bits!
Bill Moyers and Net Neutrality
If you haven't been watching Moyers on America on PBS, you're missing out. Last week's episode on Evangelicals and the environment was both disturbing and refreshing at the same time. This week's episode focuses on net neutrality, whether corporations should charge us for the internet, media ownership, etc. If the government passes a bill giving corporations (such as AT&T) the right to regulate the speed at which sites are accessed, then what's to stop...
Watching It, Watching Me: Summertime Views
[The following is an editorial column by contributor Alison Coffey and does not necessarily reflect the views of the Austinist staff. --The Editors] In my youth (also known as The 80's) summertime was not a prime time for television viewing. The Keatons and the Seavers were on vacation (hey--does anyone remember how Mike Seaver's best friend had the nickname Boner?) and unless you liked reruns of Good Times (which I did, actually) or watching...

Project Runway #1 In Our Hearts (and the rest of America)
Is it Heidi Klum's cute way of saying auf wiedersehen? Tim Gunn's adorable, yet stern mentoring? Or, perhaps it is the mix of personality disorders present among the designers in this most entertaining of shows. Whatever it is, it works. And it rules. Bravo execs should be getting raises anytime now because last Wednesday's episode of Project Runway was the #1 rated show in Bravo history. Take that Queer Eye. It was also, amazingly, the...
Summertime, and the Shows Are Still Addictive
While our usual appointment television shows are on summer hiatus, we thought that we wouldn’t be watching much television this season. But that was not to be the case! We have been sitting on our couch in the A/C this summer watching these guilty pleasures: Project Runway, Weds @ 9pm, Bravo. No other show would make us turn on the Miss Universe pageant to see if a contestant was wearing the right gown. We...
Austinist Movie Review: Wassup Rockers
Clark is known for playing with realism and social documentary—mixing fact and fiction—and this cartoonish turn is an unwelcome development. It’s hard to tell whether he’s trying to be funny in these scenes, or what, but they definitely ring strange. As do the madcap chase scenes in which the kids try to get out of Beverly Hills by climbing over fences and through backyards. People start dying—members of their group, as well as some of the rich people they encounter—but the movie tries to keep being a caper, which just feels disrespectful.
Low Brow High Fashion: Project Pin-Way
If you're like us people we know, you sat glued to your TV last night for the season premiere of Bravo's Project Runway. And while this year's cast can't hold a candle to last year's hotties, you've doubtless already started picking favorites among the Season 3 designers.
Elsewhere in the Ist-averse
Sometimes you need to clean yourself up, get serious, and move in with daddie for a few months before you head to Latin America for a new gig. The District bid's Jenna Bush adios. D.C.-based television shows have an elderly audience and DCist has some suggestions to fix that. They're also throwing Butterstick the panda bear a birthday bash. Yeah, we may have a few issues with our World Cup broadcasters here, but this guy...
Please Be Upstanding for Kat Candler
We love Kat so much we had to get the word out about the premiere of her new film jumping off bridges this Saturday at the SXSW Film Festival. You may not have a film pass, but you should go and try to get a ticket. Kat is not only a local filmmaker to support, she is a spotlight on truth and beauty. Great independent films don't have to always be about crude jokes, violence,...
Austin's a Hot Little Rental Market
Last night we caught Project Jay on Bravo and last season's Project Runway winner was looking at wee apartments in Brooklyn for $2000 or more. We laughed because our rent is almost half that for a house here in Austin. Well, we may have laughed too soon . . . News8Austin reports that Austin "is experiencing the hottest rental market in five years, and the rates continue to climb, even outside the city." Yikes! Thanks to multiple factors, including the Katrina evacuees who came to love Austin too much to leave (and can you blame them?), supply is running a little lower than it has been and demand is much higher. People love Austin so much that they will pay these higher rents even when their funds are still as skimpy as usual.
