Between running a coffeehouse and his recent venture, Owl Tree Roasting, Progress Coffee owner Joshua Bingaman was surely already one of the busiest people in Austin—it was of some surprise, then, when he sent out a random dispatch a few weeks ago from Turkey, excitedly announcing the launch of yet another enterprise—in footwear.

Weird Weeds are continuing their month-long residency at Progress Coffee with a change-up for their second to last performance.

We're proud of this community, and we can't think of a better time to celebrate it than on the eve of Fun Fun Fun Festival. Join on us November 7 promptly at 8 p.m. for Local Music Is Sexy VI at the Mohawk Bar on Red River.

The concept of the residency, so successful sometimes, so listless if you don’t get it right. Progress Coffee (500 San Marcos, Studio 105, 78702) presents its own version with a very simple mission statement -- “1 month, 2 bands, 3 bucks.” In June, Nic Armstrong (IV Thieves) headlines the residency with Shapes Have Fangs and Loxsly alternating as the opening bands. Shapes Have Fangs kick things off on this Friday (and on the 27th of this month) while Loxsly does the honors on the 20th. Each Friday, the music starts at 9 p.m. and lasts until midnight. July’s line-up boasts three excellent acts (in some combination) as well -- Brazos, {{{ SUNSET }}}, and Canopy. That’s equates roughly to 6 bands for $6 multiplied by 4 times a month minus 1 band each Friday over 2 months = badass. Or something awesome like that. And while you’re at it, why not grub a Fruit Cup or PB+J Panini -- Progress Coffee Menu.

Image via misterjingo on Flickr. Azul (1808 East Caesar Chavez)Now Closed[info]Last week, popular East Side coffee and food spot Azul closed down for good on the day before Thanksgiving. The converted house at E. Cesar Chavez and Chicon had been serving the neighborhood since 2000 with a mix of coffee, sandwiches, and breakfast items. It had been featured as one of Austin's best coffees in both Zagat's Texas restaurant guide and hipster travel guide eat.shop.austin....

Photo courtesy Progress Coffee, 500 Street San Marcos ProjectThe time's flown by so fast that it's almost hard to imagine, but eastside cafe Progress Coffee turns three today. It took over a year to transform what used to be a derelict warehouse into the beloved coffeehouse, which today anchors one of Austin's fastest growing creative communities. Nearby businesses now run the gamut from moped retrofitters and photography studios to film production companies and "digital media...

Last fall, a friend referred us to a mysterious new website. The page at Supper Underground promised a multi-course meal at a secret location with a small group of guests. Intrigued, we signed up for the next dinner, and received a cryptic email with an address and time several days later. The September event was held at a tony Westlake Hills estate with a lovely back patio garden. Candles flickered on the porch, quiet...

One of the more intriguing panels during SXSW Interactive isn't even part of the official conference: 20x2 assembles twenty interesting individuals from the creative industry -- "writers, musicians, filmmakers, web geeks and other bon vivants" -- and poses a broad, abstract question that each must answer in two minutes. Having been around since 2001, questions presented at 20x2s past have included "Who Are You?", "What's the Word?", and "What's the Big Idea?". Abstract, indeed. This...

Of all the cafés in Austin, Progress Coffee has to be one of the most ambitious. Ambitious may even be an understatement considering what owners Joshua and Sarah Bingaman have done to establish their little eastside gem as a casual, cultural environment that’s equally welcoming to day and night crowds. In addition to serving deconstructed delicacies, traditional café fare, coffee, and booze, Progress Coffee also regularly hosts literary events, art exhibitions, and live music. They...

Zagat's 2007 America's Top Restaurants Survey is out and although the setup on this one begs for an immediate rimshot, it's true - we love eating out. In fact, only Houston residents eat out with more frequency *snicker* than Austinites. Hungry Houstonians are eating out an average of 4.2 meals per week while residents of Austin and Dallas/Ft. Worth eat out an average of 4 times per week. Trailing in weekly eating-out outings are...

Central Texans have a new device for navigating their dining outings and it is called Food Hawk. The website describes its services as a tool "to help people select restaurants and find other area food resources based on their personal interests in cuisine, dining experience, location and price through a searchable Web site." Works for us. Hungry Austinites can search for restaurants by name, cuisine, or neighborhood. An advanced search allows one to enter a zip code, price range or even an ambiance. Are you in the mood for cozy or quaint? Black cloths or white cloths? Also notable is the listing of personal chefs, cooking classes, wineries, and farmer's markets.

Saturday night, Austin Mopeds is joining TRNSFR (a web development company) and Progress Coffee to throw a party for the grand opening of their new moped shop. They're bringing in a few DJs, including Tycho, Dusty Brown (California) and Nautilis for the event.

Ty Chandler is a man with a mission, and this mission is to get his favorite bands (many of them Austin bands) listened to and appreciated. Because it seems like every other person in Austin is in a band (or writing a screenplay, but that's another story) and because the booking in town is so competitive (largely due to the questionable amibtion of one powerful booking agent), his mission has been a difficult one....
