Weekend Music Preview: Erol Alkan, The Frontier Brothers, & Jigga Stardust

Weekend Music Preview: Erol Alkan, The Frontier Brothers, & Jigga Stardust

We’ve been fans of Learning Secrets for quite a while now. Besides constantly hosting bumping residencies around town (currently every Friday at Red Fez), LS regularly brings in revered DJs and the like. This Thursday, at Republic Live, LS presents Erol Alkan, disc jockey, producer, musician, and all-around bad-ass purveyor of pulsating beats galore. Somewhat of a legend, at least in the U.K., Alkan was an integral part of the fabled Trash events in London, and has worked with acts such as The Long Blondes and Boyz Noize. He has also remixed material by a whole slew of luminaries including Franz Ferdinand, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Hot Chip, Justice, and Klaxons. A rather impressive resume, if you ask us. Don’t miss out on this inevitable dance party -- get your tickets here. And check out this hilarious promo video by the LS team. more ›

Interview: The Clouds are Ghosts CD Release [Beauty Bar / Tonight]

The Clouds are Ghosts celebrate the release of their self-titled debut full-length tonight at Beauty Bar. The local outfit harvests textured atmospheres, imagined on soothing electro backdrops, sustained by Jason Morris’ delicate voice, and decorated with enchanting embellishments from choice instruments such as the piano, violin, and organ. We caught up with the band this week to check up on their background, influences, and recording process. more ›

Frank Smith continue as the headliners at Progress Coffee’s Residency series on Friday evening, and if you’re a fan of pure pop melodies, you surely must attend the Wild Weekend Power Pop Festival at The Mohawk on both Friday and Saturday. Emo’s offers up Oh No! Oh My! inside and Toko-Ri Get High at the Lounge. Beerland is stacked with a stellar lineup as well on Friday -- a bill consisting of Dixie Witch, Amplified Heat, and The Golden Boys should make for a fantastic psychedelic rock show. more ›

Fun Fun Fun Fest Looks Hot Hot Hot

Fun Fun Fun Fest Looks Hot Hot Hot

What a difference a year makes—certainly in the case of this fledgling music festival. Last December's inaugural Fun Fun Fun Fest featured over two dozen bands and DJs, and showcased a good variety of indie rock, punk, and electronic music. This year, they've grown even bigger, better, and bolder: the second annual installment will span two days and has been pushed ahead by a month, to November 3rd and 4th. Staying true to their... more ›

Beauty Bar Celebrates First Year Of Drinkin' Pretty

Beauty Bar Celebrates First Year Of Drinkin' Pretty

THURSDAY NIGHT! It was one year ago (with some down-rounding) that we first started darkening the patio of Beauty Bar. Back then they didn’t have the credit card machine working just yet, but their cheap Lone Star & whiskey specials kept things kosher on the cash front. It’s been a pretty wild year for them ever since, what with the arrival of those blessed credit card machines (there’s no money quite like fake money)... more ›

Teaching Our Indie Kids to Dance

Teaching Our Indie Kids to Dance

Last week's Chronicle has an excellent article by Marc Savlov about a handful of local DJs that we've long adored: the kids of Car Stereo (Wars) and Learning Secrets, plus Prince Klassen, DJ Mel, and KidIndie. What's going on with the Austin DJ and club scene that, seemingly overnight, it's transformed into something akin to the Please Kill Me-era East Village NYC art-punk scene of three decades past? Reinvention, that's what. ["Planet Funk Meets Planet... more ›

Friday: Radical NY! At AMOA Downtown

Friday: Radical NY! At AMOA Downtown

It was the winter of 1997. Toronto. Some big and atrocious-looking gallery on the edge of pig-windowed Chinatown. That’s where we first got to see the brilliance of Keith Haring up close. Well, “up close” isn’t all that necessary when the piece is thirty goddamn feet tall, but it was really there. In all it’s simplistic glory. Thoughtful. Angry. People with dog-heads and politics. You could almost touch it with your tongue it was... more ›
