Austinites braved the dipping mercury on Friday night to see the latest aspirants in the "Be the Next Joy Division" contest, She Wants Revenge. The sometimes-appreciative but smaller- than-normal crowd bounced and swayed to the resonence of monotonic vocals and 80's-era goth guitar stomp. Openers included high energy Seattle band Pretty Girls Make Graves, who busted out tracks from all three of their albums, and the ever-hypnotic Monsters Are Waiting.

Everyone, no matter his or her station in life, has either jilted someone or been jilted in their love life. The feelings of anger, betrayal, and humiliation run deep, and there is no force more powerful or threatening than a woman scorned. What does any of this have to do with naming your band She Wants Revenge and making post-Joy Division anthems in line with bands like Interpol? Just beware, there might be some...

We first saw Pretty Girls Make Graves four years ago, at a derelict bar in a derelict neighborhood on the outskirts of Buffalo, New York. Armed with the songs from their debut album, Good Health, PGMG laid waste to the tiny, beer-soaked stage; all passion and power and urgency, they punched out that half-hour masterpiece with unrelenting energy and deafening volume.

With new shows on sale from Sonic Youth, INXS, Echo and the Bunnymen, and Rancid, it seems to be college radio nostalgia week for the concert update. There are also a nice batch of new indie shows, including Tapes 'n' Tapes for Pitchfork fans, Dios Malos for the mellow types, The Futureheads for the edgy punky stuff, and even Tilly and the Wall for you tap dancers. On with the shows: May: 5/10 -...

After SXSW trashes our fair town, Coachella layers the California desert with dusty beer cans, and Wall of Sound leaves Fort Worth a city ... well, much the same, we're probably heading over to Sasquatch, the annual Pacific Northwest festival at Washingon State's scenic Gorge Amphitheatre. Scheduled to perform during the three-day Memorial Weekend blitz are Austinites Trail of Dead and Iron & Wine, plus a salivatory stew of sweet, sweet bands: FRIDAY, MAY 26...
