The Kills play rock with the sustained tension of a chain smoker in the long moment just after a drag and before exhalation. This duo of Alison “VV” Mosshart and Jamie “Hotel” Hince strip British indie down to its indispensables—those being his and hers guitars, a drum machine (get over it), and rebellious disaffection involving the occasional Dostoyevsky reference.

Austin label End Sounds has put together a big party to kick off SX music. On Tuesday, 3/17, Red 7 will host Madball, Death In The Park, Reign Supreme, Mike Herrera's Tumbledown, Call To Preserve, True Widow, Bitter End, The Escape Frame, and an ad hoc Minor Threat cover band featuring Zach Blair, Luke Abbey, Frank Carter, and Sam Ghanbar. The show is open to the public and cover is $10.

A couple more brief official updates: Thursday, March 19 as part of the Universal Republic Records showcase, Lil John and Tori Amos will appear at La Zona Rosa with other guests. Additionally, PJ Harvey and her collaborator John Parish will be performing on Saturday, March 21 in support of their March 31 release A Woman and a Man Walked By.

If you're a fan of dreamy indie-pop and you haven't spent time with a Sparklehorse album, watch out. The North Carolina-based Mark Linkous and his band play hazy, epic music that is worth getting to know. All of the proper credits are here: production from Flaming Lips and Mercury Rev mainstay Dave Fridmann, a guest spot from Danger Mouse, and even some added credibility via a collaboration with Tom Waits.
