Food: How Italian Food Conquered the World Book Signing and Dinner
Shawn Cirkiel's new Italian spot the backspace has an interesting new booking on Friday, April 15 - or rather, book signing. Meet highly acclaimed food and travel writer, John Mariani, and receive a copy of his new book, How Italian Food Conquered the World, at a delicious dinner event hosted by the backspace.
Food: Going Italian With Shawn Cirkiel At 'the backspace'
In late 2007, CIA-trained chef Shawn Cirkiel did something a little crazy - he opened an upscale restaurant on East 6th Street - then a culinary Siberia of downtown. Three years later, with parkside a fixture of downtown's upscale dining scene, Cirkiel is branching out...about half a block out. His new restaurant, the backspace, is styled after a casual Italian neighborhood bar, and serves Italian wine and beer, wood-fired Neapolitan pizzas, salads, cheese plates, and antipasto. We recently sat down with Chef Cirkiel during a quiet moment at parkside to discuss the new restaurant, Austin's evolving food scene, and the local culinary community.

Food: A Talk With House Pizzeria Owner Scott Talkington
Is pizza just a giant taco? No. Is pizza a religion? Yes. So says Scott Talkington, self-described "head pizzaiolo" of North Austin's House Pizzeria.
And a mighty articulate pizza-maker is he. Scott recently dished to Austinist about the secrets of sauce, the best toppings ever, and how KFC paved the way for his wonderful - and, we daresay, superior - food establishment.

New Jersey Expats Lose Local Landmark
East coast pizza fans lost a local mecca Saturday night when an after hours fire swept through the Saccone's Pizza on 183. The Statesman* spoke with owner Daniel Saccone who said that someone broke into his restaurant sometime after midnight, stole money “and then torched it.” Saccone said that all employees at the restaurant will be retained and each transferred to one of his two other restaurants in Round Rock and Leander. “We have...
South Austin's Breakthrough Pizza Joint
Although it may just look like a pizza stand parked in a Mobil gas station on Barton Skyway and South Lamar, Giovanni's Pizza Stand may be one of the greatest South Austin pizza joints since Austin's Pizza (Ed Note: and Home Slice Pizza, ahem). Barton Hills residents don't have far to look for value-priced pizza with a ton of toppings to satisfy their hunger after a jump in Barton Springs, a spin around The...
AFF Presents Tilt: The Battle to Save Pinball
Whenever we hear the word “pinball” all we can think of is drinking suicides in the game room at Mazzio’s Pizza and the lyrical wonderment of “that deaf, dumb and blink kid sure plays a mean pinball” from the Who’s Tommy. You may think of that one time, at Le Fun, when you pinged and flipped and bumpered your way to a tour of the Addams Family mansion, not knowing that you were conquering one...
Last Week in -IST
With all that went down this week, we thought we thought we'd cheer everyone up by giving everyone a double dose of dogs. It was a rollercoaster ride of emotions this week at DCist. Like the rest of country, we were floored by the news of so many dead coming out of Virginia Tech, and with so many of the victims and their relatives from the D.C. area, we felt it important to pay...

Share a story about a visit to Austin or a previous trip to SXSW. - Chandler: I was getting a slice from Hoeks Pizza; they were playing a live Slayer DVD. It was blaring on their speakers. Meanwhile, up the street comes a group of fundamentalist Christians with placards giving details of the upcoming Armageddon. The leader of the group had a megaphone and was preaching all kinds of nonsense. It was the perfect...

Austinist Interviews SXSW: Luminous Orange
For 15 years, Yokohama's Luminous Orange have been crafting a sound of equal parts gentle Kim Deal-style female vocals, noisy guitar feedback, and rhythms that owe debts to both shoegaze and Sonic Youth. The resolutely indie-rock Japanese outfit makes a return visit to SXSW next month after a successful trip in 2006. Austinist spoke with Luminous Orange founder and vocalist/guitarist Rie Takeuchi about the band's SXSW experiences, along with their general distaste for Texas'...
