Fact: Too much has been made about Kaufman's persona and that of his characters. Aside from being a genius, Kaufman is also clever enough in an everyday sense to write outside his life. Not every element of his films is a literal representation of his person. He is there, there is no doubt. But he does not have a twin brother.

Still from Lions for LambsWe were under the impression that "No Country for Old Men" was opening this weekend, and we just found out it's only coming to "big" cities today—Austinites have to wait till next weekend. Miffed, we're only slightly placated by the other offerings at hand, though Philip Seymour Hoffman is hard to turn down... Lions for Lambs: Meryl Streep is a reporter, Tom Cruise is typecast as a neocon congressman, Robert Redford...
After a fantastic week of panels, parties and screenings, the Austin Film Festival will wrap up tonight with a screening of Sidney Lumet's highly anticipated Before the Devil Knows You're Dead. Lumet (the man behind films like Running on Empty, Serpico, and one of our favorite movies ever, Dog Day Afternoon) directs an unbelievably great cast including Albert Finney, Ethan Hawke, Marisa Tomei and Philip Seymour Hoffman in this caper-gone-wrong thriller. We haven't had the...
The complete schedule for the 14th annual Austin Film Festival has been announced, and it looks pretty amazing. 79 feature films and 98 shorts will screen over the course of eight days at various locations in Austin, beginning on October 11th with Brett Morgen’s much hyped docudrama Chicago 10, starring Hank Azaria, Dylan Baker, Nick Nolte, Mark Ruffalo, Roy Scheider, Liev Schreiber and Jeffrey Wright. Jason Reitman's brilliant new comedy Juno (starring Ellen Page, Michael...
Some people may shy away from Infamous, thinking there is no need to see two movies in one year about the complex character of Truman Capote. That would be a mistake. This film is getting favorable reviews, which is quite a feat considering it must compete in the shadow of a virtuoso performance by Philip Seymour Hoffman in the first biopic. And, the movie was filmed in Austin. So what more do you want? How...
You may have heard that a certain filmmaker is in town for his own personal film fest. Well, he's also making national news, as Quentin Tarantino has reportedly agreed to come on board to direct the new biopic chronicling the life and times of Jimi Hendrix. The film, which has been stalled in development deals for what seems to be ages, has the approval of Hendrix's brother Leon and Jimi's estate. In ACL News...
You might feel lost and confused and out of place in this conservative, W voting, war loving society (well, half of it), but just remember this next time you are thinking about a one way ticket to Canada: Jon Stewart is hosting the Oscars! Y'all, did you hear us? Jon Stewart! Something has to be right in the world. We don't pretend to be experts, but our predictions are: Best Actor: Philip Seymour Hoffman...
Ahhh, it’s that time of year again – can you smell the celebrity sweat in the air? Oscar time, baby! The 78th annual Academy Awards will air March 5 on ABC. Plan your party now: gather your friends together, don your Oscar de la Renta (that was kind of a pun, see?), break out the Dom Perignon Andre and the brie, place your bets and watch the magic unfold. The absolute best part about...
Robert Horry has done the truly amazing once again. No, we are not talking about his unbelievable second half/overtime performance of last night. It is much greater than that. The Fresh Prince of the NBA has somehow made us feel that the last 12 years are all happening simultaneously. Every June we turn on the NBA Playoffs and see Big Shot Bob doing the unthinkable, yet somehow expected, extricating his teams from the jaws of defeat. Last night, after sitting by as an observer while his team got hammered in games three and four of the NBA Finals, Horry decided to take matters into his own hands. Instead of passing up shots, he took them. And he made them, with alarming consistency. And when he was not banging down triples, he was reliving the days of his youth, flying through the paint and extending his lanky 6’10” frame to dunk right on top of the unsuspecting Pistons. Year in and year out Big Shot Bob steps it up in crunch time. We have followed Horry’s career since we sat courtside in Houston and watched him help Hakeem bring the city of Houston its first professional sports championships. And ever since, it seems like every time we turn on the tv, there he is. Whether it be in Rockets' red, Laker purple and gold or the black and white of the Spurs, Horry has found a way to keep playing basketball deep into Spring while other players make tee times.
