A recent ranking of pet-friendly cities by Rent.com puts Austin in sixth place, for such amenities as Zilker Botanical Gardens and off-leash parks.

Just days before it was set to launch, the Williamson County Regional Animal Shelter has decided to pull its week-long "Black is Beautiful" campaign, meant to spur adoption of the center's black-coated dogs and cats.

Seeing that Austin is such an awesome pet-friendly town, it should come as no surprise that Animal Fair Magazine has given the historic and lovely Driskill Hotel one of seven “Five star Bone” awards in recognition of their Pampered Pet Program.

Free Week is still kicking -- hard. There's a veritable horde of bands to catch tonight and tomorrow.

*The views expressed in The Laurie Show are those of the author and do not represent Austinist as a whole.* -ed. note Greetings from Froggy McGee, writing to you while recovering in sick bay. I'm happy to report that the Bay Area tour I went on with the brilliant and talented crew of the Broken Clock Cabaret, featuring the rowdy and ravenous No Salvation Army Band, was an absolute success! Unfortunately, the crazy schedule and...

Austin Humane Society, the largest nonprofit no-kill pet shelter and adoption center in town, recently suffered a tremendous setback: yesterday, the facility's A/C system abruptly shut down. A subsequent inspection found the system to be broken beyond repair. "Our air conditioning unit died," said AHS representative Lisa Starr to KXAN. "Went kaput." The center is installing a temporary mobile A/C unit today, but this solution won't work for the long term; even now, the animals...

Last Friday, Pets America delivered pet oxygen masks to City Hall; there are enough so that 100 local emergency vehicles can be outfitted with sets of three masks (cat, small dog and large dog). The funds for this project were raised in cooperation with Tomlinson's Pet Supplies, Lowe's, the Austin Community Foundation, and individual donors. Austinites helped raise over $5,500 to help save the lives of cats and dogs in need of oxygen in fiery situations.

The Austin Zoo boasts many fuzzy faces and feline friends (just don't get too close) as well as birds, turtles, snakes, and one giant cockroach. Spend a weekend afternoon feeding the goats, sheep, pigs, and llamas as well as getting close up views of rescued bears, lions, and a host of other animals that don't make for great pets. Since Austin Zoo is a rescue zoo that "provides sanctuary to displaced animals from a...

  • There is officially a place in hell for illegal-drug dealers...but what happens if/when said drug becomes legal someday?...perhaps you can just fill out some paperwork to get through the holy gates.
  • ...and Ricky Williams might be doing just that. He is still testing positive for the reefer.
  • Obesity is not only a problem in adults and children, your pets are getting fat, too.
  • Parks may soon get funding from condo developers. So we're guessing that Austin should have a TON of greenspace in a few years.
  • You're never too young to carrry a firearm.
  • Filling up your tank could double as happy hour in the near future.
  • Even a German company couldn't save this American car company.

It's the Effing Spamarama Y'all! Tomorrow! SPAMARAMA ® 2007, Austin's annual pandemonious potted pork festival, does its part to “Keep Austin Weird” celebrating its 29th anniversary on April 7!

Austin Pets Alive!, a local organization working to hinder pet overpopulation, is hosting a fundraiser tonight. Their Pet Friend of the Year, Tom Spencer from KLRU, will be feted, and State Rep. Eddie Rodriguez and City Councilmember Lee Leffingwell will make appearances. The money raised tonight will benefit a group that promotes spaying/neutering services to the Austin community. Austin resolved to become a "no kill" city in the 90s, but in 2005, over half...

If you're hiking, consider charging up your iPod, as Seattlest finds out that a man lost during a hike was found by the glow of his iPod. That cleverness seems to be devoid in cops who were using police cruiser instant messaging clients - although we imagine IMs "so are you nakie" to be included in cop shows, just for realism. If only the cops were busting the Hummer-driving jerk who made a poor...

  • A recent CBS 42 poll shows a high disapproval rating for Gov. Rick Perry. We believe this is a direct result of all our Kinky & Cougar goober coverage.

  • Sunbathers now have a weapon against the sun. Ecamsule (sounds like scam in piglatin-almost right?) was previously only available in Canada and Europe. How is this stuff not sunscreen? Everyone's favorite fetishist is at it again! The toe-sucking bandit is being accused of gross sexual imposition. Yeah, gross. Ever wonder what happened to those hot babes from the eighties? Yeah, the ones that made your palms all hairy? The stripper who kept human skulls...

Good Morning! This kitten has two faces. Cheap, plastic crap has finally taken the backseat. Exxon surpassed Wal-Mart in the rankings of the 500 largest companies on the planet. The 2008 Class President of Lehigh University in PA set a good example for his class after he robbed a bank to pay off some gambling debts. After being humbled by the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, our favorite Mr. T is losing all the bling...
