September 11 Event: Paper Cranes For Peace

Kelsey Jukam, 23, has organized Fold and Fight for Peace. The event will consist of people folding paper cranes, which are symbols of peace, then writing words of hope and peace on the wings of the paper creatures. "It's not a direct counter protest to what Terry Jones is doing," said Jukam. Fold and Fight For Peace involves people being shown how to fold paper cranes by "crane instructors," then writing out messages of hope and peace on the wings. Paper and art supplies will be provided, though people are encouraged to bring their own to the event if they can. more ›

Sgt. Eeyore's Lonely Hearts Club Blast

Sgt. Eeyore's Lonely Hearts Club Blast

Yes kiddies, it's time once again for the annual Eeyore's Birthday Party. What Lloyd Birdwell started as a small picnic for students at the University of Texas has today swelled to a major annual festival with live bands; food vendors; adult beverages; games and whatnot, such as egg tossing and costume contests. This fictional birthday party for our favorite depressed donkey is not about recreational drug use or the "hippie" subculture, it's about the community coming together and experiencing a glimmer of hope in an otherwise dark time…that and a bunch of "hippies" spacing out in the park. more ›

Austin has built its reputation of being a fun, liberal, artistic and open community in part due to activities such as this weekend’s annual Eeyore’s Birthday Party in Pease Park. About 40 years ago, University of Texas Delta Tau Delta fraternity member Lloyd Birdwell and some of his buddies started this fictional birthday party, partly as a spring rite of passage and partly out of the desire to throw a big ol’ party in... more ›
