Watching the presidential primary unfold these last few weeks, the thought has often occurred to us: "When will Obama and Clinton shut up about saving the people of Darfur from displacement and genocide, and start talking about the important stuff, like plaigarized speeches and superdelegates?" Haven't had the same reaction? Tonight, a very different kind of politics will be on display at the B. Iden Payne Theatre at the University of Texas. Our city will play host to one of the great voices for democracy and social justice in post-colonial Africa.

It's an odd proposition, but according to Michael Kimmelman, New York Times' chief art critic, there are striking parallels between museums and department stores as "institutions of social change." He's in Austin this afternoon to present his argument, which will also examine the role of commerce in today's museums. A finalist for the 2000 Pulitzer Prize in criticism, Kimmelman has authored several books on art and art history. Notable works include “Portraits: Talking with Artists...

Saturday night, we struck out for the UT campus (in spite of the ricin scare) to take in an evening of theatre. Between PR and local coverage, our curiosity about UT's production of "Aisle 7" was adequately piqued. But first, some helpful information for those of you who, like us, didn't attend UT. "Aisle 7" is being performed at the B. Iden Payne Theatre, the location of which you won't find anywhere online. Go...

Then again, this weekend's new works all come from the Specialty Aisle -- from Shakespeare to radio theatre, high school productions to college work, This Week in Theatre offers several interesting things to choose from. Let's get to it. The UT Department of...
