If you happen to ever field a question from an out-of-towner asking, “Who is Owen Egerton and what does he do?” you might save yourself a lot of time by simply listing what he can’t do. As far as we can tell, that list would be short at best but more likely totally blank (admittedly we have yet to learn if he knows Origami or kickboxing though it wouldn’t surprise us if he could do both simultaneously). Because Egerton, for the three of you who might not have heard, is one of Austin’s most supremely multi-talented geniuses, a man with a mighty heart to boot.
Currently he’s showing off his endless skills-- this time writing and acting-- in his one-man show, The Other Side of Sleep, at ZACH. More on that in a sec. But first, a brief refresher in case you want a crib sheet to answer the two-part question above. Owen is an author—his latest amazing book is The Book of Harold. He’s a comedian specializing in improv (perhaps you’ll remember his long-running, award-winning The Sinus Show at The Alamo Drafthouse). He was a member of the alarmingly hilarious faux boy band Cedar Fever. Austin Chronicle readers twice voted him Best Writer in Austin. He co-wrote and starred in DadLabs on the web. And soon he sets sail for a screenwriting career in LA. Oh, and he is H-O-T— The Welsh Brad Pitt on the outside, and a cross between Einstein and Mr. T on the inside.
Review: The Other Side of Sleep with Owen Egerton [Theater]
Reading Preview and Interview - Owen Egerton Discovers (a) Religion
Owen Egerton is an accomplished local writer and comedian who works freely between humor and heartbreak, pathos and poop jokes. Egerton is lately celebrating the release of The Book of Harold, the Illegitimate Son of God, a novel ten years in the making which gleefully explores the life of a Houston-area man who claims to be the messiah.
Texas Book Festival: Previews For This Weekend
OH SNAP! So, Austin is considered the Live Music Capital of the world? Well that’s not all that’s crackin’ up and spacklin' in and amongst our cultured ranks. Some of us can read, and certainly do. Which is why Austin is blessed to host the Texas Book Festival again for 2009. Music’s nice and all for listenin’ and whatnot, but BOOKS and WRITERS will be on the main stage this weekend at the Texas Book Festival!
Guest Editorialist: Owen Egerton!
In celebration of his newest release, and in anticipation of various readings about town, Austinist asked Austin author Owen Egerton to write something special to be published here, just for you. From his heart. Something sacred. Something of wow and character. And that is precisely what he has done here. But for those readers who, like most of us, are slaving away at some dismal day job beneath pale lights of buzzing fluorescence amidst the scent of burnt coffee, where certain words or humor are unfortunately frowned upon, some of the subject matter and phrasing may be deemed NSFW. Perhaps you should wait until you get home. Or live a little and risk it. Hell, it’s Friday. And seriously, this is quite possilby the funniest thing we've read all week.
Read And Rock - Owen Egerton and Doug Dorst Read Words!
Tonight at Joe’s Coffee on South Congress next to the San Jose, Austinist favorite Owen Egerton and a likely Austinist soon-to-be-favorite Doug Dorst will be reading and other shenanigans to celebrate the Fall Issue of American Short Fiction. Their cahooting will be accompanied by the decidedly Austin tones of Blood Country (formerly Chili Cold Blood), who appear to have a swell sense of humor about their motherfuckin’ selves. Words, music, and the potential for public wrestling betwixt the two writers are all practically inevitable. This is a splendid trifecta display of Austin creativity, and the potential for the accidental production of a unified singularity of said creativity which would cause an implosion of all that we know is, well, actually that idea is completely absurd. And absurdity is the name of tonight’s game.
Matthew Stuart Show at Owen Egerton's House
Stuart was recently nominated for this year's storySouth Million Writers Award for Fiction for his online short story, '"A Baby Is A Baby Is A Baby," which you can read here. He's also been commissioned in the past to create paintings and illustrations for such literary cool kids as Mary Karr (The Liar's Club) and Salvador Plascencia (The People of Paper).
I Am So Popular: P(graph)ing My Pants
Being incredibly popular is really very fun but can also, you know, wear a girl out. Which is why, as you’re reading this, my ass is planted firmly and deeply upon a beach chair in Hawai’i for a week as I rest up and prepare for my next round of popular posts.
But just because I’m away doesn’t mean I can neglect my duties. And so this week, I present an interview with Kareem Badr, one of the four masterminds in the improv troupe Parallelogramophonograph, aka Pgraph [www.pgraph.com]. (And yes, you might have noticed, I am running a lot of interviews lately. I love other people’s stories. If there’s someone you want interviewed, drop me a note and I’ll see what I can do.)
I first saw Pgraph perform at the 2008 Frontera Fest. They did a French Farce and, as I detailed here, I just about drenched my pantalones I was laughing so hard.
Sinus Show Members Reunite for Back to the Future
For the first time in over a year, erstwhile Sinus Show members Owen Egerton, John Erler and Joe Parsons are back together, skewering bad films like some kind of movie mocking Voltron. And this time, they're taking dead aim at Robert Zemeckis' goofy sci-fi adventure Back to the Future.
Your Deluxe Guide to the Texas Book Festival: Part One
This weekend, while many of our friends are shaking their fists across town at the Fun Fun Fun Fest, the bookworms among us will climb the Capitol steps to get our “shhh!” on at the Texas Book Festival. We’ve waited all year for this, the biggest literary event in Austin. All the great local writers will be on hand, along with a smattering of nationally recognized authors. For anyone looking for a thorough introduction to...
Creepy Crawly Cinema: Haunting Movie House Happenings
As far as ghosts and ghoulies go, we know that Austin has spooky entertainment options coming out the yin-yang, not to mention the standard trick-or-treating action. However, it has been brought to our attention that it is no longer socially acceptable for 20 to 30-somethings to beg candy off their neighbors (we have no shame), and our sexy bumblebee/sexy heart surgeon/sexy bottle of pepto bismol costumes are looking a little shabby this season. So...
This Week in Theatre: The Play's the Thing
The Bard is back! This weekend only—Shakespeare shenanigans you won't want to miss. But first we're dropping a hint about a little show we've heard is fantastic. Shrewd Productions' Io: a myth about you runs through November 10, Th/Fr/Sa at the Vortex. This play with music features an all-star cast, including our current biggest crush Jude Hickey. Described as a "foray into heroic tales, vengeance, decadence, salvation, forgiveness, and rock & roll," it contains strong...
How To Best Be The Best
Austin author, entertainer, and all-around Renaissance man Owen Egerton is finally receiving some formal recognition for all of his hard work and hijinks. He's one of this year's two Best of Austin "Best Authors," in no small part due to his darkly-comedic book of short stories, How To Best Avoid Dying, released earlier this year by Austin-based Dalton Publishing. Egerton tied for the prestigious award with journalist-turned-punk-rocker-Texas-Rollergirl Melissa "Melicious" Joulwan. Her bruiser of a memoir,...

Celebrate The Right To Marry This Saturday
He's a comedian, a novelist, an ordained minister, a dad, a husband, and a walker through Spain (ask him about that walking trip sometime). What's isn't Owen Egerton? If you ask that question, one of your answers won't be a member of hot local boy band Cedar Fever. And, as if he isn't busy enough already, he's one of the main dudes behind The Right to Marry, an awesome organization whose goal "...is to promote...

Time to celebrate the 2nd anniversary of the Dionysium
Two years ago LB Deyo and Buzz Moran first gathered the faithful for a unique festival of intellect and revelry called The Dionysium. Tonight, we're all invited to celebrate that event, with "another scintillating monthly installment of cerebral stimulation, cultural enlightenment and ill-advised drunkenness." Here's the line-up for the June Dionysium: Owen Egerton of the Sinus Show will read his short story "Waffle," while someone else sits in the front row and makes jokes over...
Pleeeeeeease: This Week in Theatre
Our common pitch to the non-theatre-goer: Hey, you’re a fun looking guy/gal. Wanna give something new a try? You know that persnickety twitch in the back of your head, reminding you that you feel disconnected from friends, neighbors and co-workers? You know how, in a quiet moment, alone in your apartment with the sinking feeling that there just isn’t anything imaginable that you could possibly want to do, you wish that you’d felt one...
