Give Local: Guide to Holiday Charity [Part Three]
As you sit down to write your annual letter to Santa, consider taking a turn behind the sleigh's reigns by fulfilling someone's holiday wish. Many local non-profits have put together wish lists of items that would be particularly useful in helping fulfill their missions. Other groups are making your holiday shopping a little easier by suggesting gift ideas that also give back to the community. For other charity ideas check out our post about holiday volunteering and our roundup of organizations providing services to the area's most needy. As always, visit I Live Here, I Give Here for a comprehensive list of area non-profits.
No, Really, It's Cold Outside: 2009 Santa Speedo Run
Although most of us have probably never wanted to see Santa in a speedo, Saturday December 12, gives you the chance to do just that. If Santa decides to take part in this year's Fun Run at Zilker Park and join Team Santa Speedo. Otherwise you'll probably see some pleasantly fit folks strapped in red banana hammocks and bikinis running to raise funds and awareness for Out Youth, a non-profit that provides services to LGBT and questioning youth.
The Prom Your Parents Warned You About [Out Youth Alt Adult Prom]
Boys who wish they could have taken a boy to prom and girls who wish they could have taken a girl now have the chance to relive that night. Hell, even girls who took gay boys to prom hoping to at last be disrespected have one more chance to get it right—local nonprofit Out Youth will be hosting an Alternative Adult Prom this Saturday night at Adora Hall. This prom gives GLBT adults (as well as straight supporters) the opportunity to travel back in time for the ultimate high school dance.
Santa Speedo Runners Back for Seconds [Trail of Lights 5k]
At this year's chilly Trail of Lights 5K race, don't be surprised if you happen upon a pack of sexy sprinters sporting little more than red swim briefs.
Local LGBT Groups Team Up to Form Pride Coalition
In an effort to put to rest the debate over whether Austin has an actual gay and lesbian community, eight prominent LGBT organizations today announced the formation of the Pride Coalition. The unifying entity is, in many ways, largely an effort to eliminate some of the petty squabbling over resources and public attention that many of these groups often found themselves caught up in. It also hopes to better promote the various community volunteer efforts that take place throughout the year.
