The Church of the Friendly Ghost continues to showcase the finest Austin has to offer in the experimental scene this Saturday at the Salvage Vanguard Theater on Manor Road. The lineup this Saturday is fantastic for fans of minimalist ambient music as well as fuzzy, pedal-induced brainwave avante noise. Rick Reed, who mentioned before, uses old battered electronic devices like sine wave generators, short wave radios and a vintage EMS analogue synthesizers to achieve his......

*The views expressed in The Laurie Show are those of the author and do not represent Austinist as a whole.* -ed. note Once again, I am plagued with the thought of: "Why is everything happening this weekend?! WHY, I ask you?!" Literally, it's packed with such a wide variety of live musical entertainment that your brain will explode. It can be a good dilemma to have, though. I'll try to summarize as best I......

On Saturday, the City presented a preliminary draft of the North Burnet Gateway Re-Development plan, which includes the Domain. We skipped the presentation and went shopping. The shopping is awesome (got some hot Pumas), but we're not sure what to make of the development. It is VMU (at least the part that has been built), appears reasonably dense, and may someday have rail. It is also a freaky, disneyfied version of "downtown." One goal......

For some of you, SXSW is an obsession. For others...not so much. While we're rather immersed in the whole SXSW experience at Austinist, we know that many of you just want to take in a free or cheap event or two during the festival to experience the thing. No problem. Here's a list of events featuring local merchants, community organizations, and radio stations that will allow you to casually dip a toe in the......

Much like their mentor Willie Nelson, the former Saxon Pub regulars Los Lonely Boys can't seem to avoid getting caught with the weed. On Saturday, Austin police responded to complaints at The Omni and arrested Boys' bassist JoJo Garza for marijuana possession... and for allegedly assaulting his fiancee Carina Lyn. While a publicist for the band has called the whole matter "a misunderstanding" and chalked the incident up to noisy partying, the Austin Police......

*This post comes from Austinist Special World Cup Correspondent Ben Gardner, Co-Host of KOOP’s SoccerMad, who is in Germany for this year’s Cup.* Three weeks in to the tournament and there are many storylines. The favorites are succeeding, while the Asian and African countries were sent packing, not to mention North America, which saw three of its four representatives finish bottom of their groups. From these three continents, only Mexico and Ghana made the cut,......

Life is bad for the Sacramento Kings. On Saturday, the Spurs absolutely decimated them in a 122-88 rout that was essentially over by halftime. No Spurs starter played more than 25 minutes, and San Antonio scored an amazing 73 points by halftime. As for the suspension: after the game, The Spurs sent game tape to the NBA arguing that Ron Artest of the Kings applied illegal contact (meaning a cheap-shot elbow) to Manu Ginobili's......

On Saturday, Austinist rolled down 71 and I-10 to Houston for NBA All-Star Weekend. Our seats could only be described as nosebleed-arific, but hey, we got to go. The event started swimmingly when a Tony Parker-led Spurs team won the jump-shooting contest over a Kobe Bryant and Magic Johnson tandem. The next event, the skills contest, featured the brightest stars of Saturday evening (with LeBron, Dwayne Wade, and Steve Nash all participating), but we......

Northwest Austin's Bull Creek Park is a, idyllic, quiet refuge replete with ancient trees, a bubbling brook and a nearby hiking trail that winds lazily through the hillside. On Saturday mornings we like to take our dog there for a dip in the water. It's a nice spot to reflect quietly on the week's insanities. And, evidently, it's also a great place for wild group orgies. Yesterday Austin police arrested 16 people after an......
