Austin indie rock four-piece Oh No Oh My haven’t faded one bit since the release of their self-titled debut in 2006 and their poppy EP Between the Devil and the Sea, which was released a year later and featured tracks like “Oh Be One” full of quirk and clever. If you’ve missed their local shows and haven’t seen them around Austin in a while, that’s because they’ve been touring, a lot. And, for the last several months these multi-instrumentalists have been readying the release of their sophomore effort, People Problems, due out next week.
Oh No Oh My CD Release Tonight at Mohawk [Preview and Interview]
Weekend Music Preview: Emo's Turns 19, KVRX Rocks Out, Let's Eat Pizza
This weekend is flush with celebrations, fundraisers, tributes, and tons and tons of music...just like every other weekend. We'll start things off by wishing happy birthday to Emo's, which turns 19. They'll be partying inside tonight with the bands Big Business, Rusted Shut, Woodgrain, and Baron Grod. At La Zona Rosa, psychedelia makes a return with both The Black Angels and Black Mountain vying for the title of this generation's drone ambassador.
Here We Go Magic at Emo's Tonight [Giveaway]
Here We Go Magic is led by singer/songwriter Luke Temple, who released two folk albums under his own name before recording Here We Go Magic's debut album at home on a four-track recorder. At the time, Temple was earning his keep by painting murals in wealthy New Yorkers' apartments, and his music has a kind of painterly, collage-like aspect.
Storm Warning: Neko Case to Hit Antone's Tonight
Case is fond of mythology. She weaves it throughout her work, whose imagery expands beyond the borders of any particular album to form connective tissue between them. Middle Cyclone expands and refracts the ideas introduced on 2006's Fox Confessor Brings the Flood. This sort of continuity from one release to the next creates the kind of body of work that makes lifelong fans of many listeners.
In many ways, Austin is a natural setting for Case's soulful, skewed-off-the-beaten-country-path vocal work. Her penetrating voice cuts a swath straight through the twangy guitars that any natural disaster would be proud of. Motley indie Austin four-piece Oh No Oh My kicks off the aural downpour at Antone's tonight.

Giveaway: Au Revoir Simone, The Antlers, Oh No! Oh My! (Plus the Concert Poster!)
Au Revoir Simone’s signature sound is created with three vintage Casios, a drum machine, and silky vocals producing melancholy yet frank harmonies. All of these sound wrapped in gauze, creating the effect of an impressionist statement in which, despite the almost military crispness of their lyrics, there are no sharp edges to be found.
Epic Show Alert: Loxsly CD Release w/Oh No Oh My!, Corto Maltese, TV Torso, and Booher & The Turkeys at the Mohawk
Where to begin? If you read the title of this post and didn't pee a little, then either you're: A) a ledger-blind CPA in your mid-to-late 50s, B) a dimension-traveling psychic man-child just beginning to understand our culture, or C) a very lucky Austin resident about to have more new favorite bands than you know what to do with. Really, all three of the aforementioned will find something to swoon over in this lineup.
Free Show Alert: Oh No! Oh My!, Corto Maltese, Loxsly, Las Brujas at Emo's
If Emo's was Public Radio, tonight's event would be the This American Life on their show schedule. Or Radiolab, depending on your flavor. It's that good, and that cheap. Technically, you should be donating to your local public radio affiliate, but that's just common friggin' citizenship. We digress; let's back away slowly from that metaphor...
Oh No! Oh My!, Corto Maltese, Legs Against Arms at Emo's Lounge!
On the off chance that Jesus Lizard jazz and R&B songs about sucking toes aren’t your thing, Emo’s Lounge has the rock-oriented antidote. Our own Oh No! Oh My! might be the biggest draw, what with their jovial, hummable tracks and cutesy name that demands to be said out loud, loudly. The band are promising a summer EP, which should jive swimmingly with their sun-loving sound, and an LP is also supposedly in the works. Hey, maybe these guys have a harder edge than we thought…their merch is too tough for Six Flags, anyway.
