AUSTIN BANDS

Young guy, wearing sunglasses inside of Quack's Bakery in the middle of the night, talking to a girl sitting near him:Do you reside here frequently? At I Luv Video on Airport Blvd., a female customer holding a DVD case: Is Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle any good? Dreadlocked Male Employee:Uh, that depends. Do you smoke weed? Female customer: I guess I could make a stop on the way home. DME: There's a...

OFFICE is playing tonight at the Mohawk, in support of their most recent full-length, A Night at the Ritz. Born as a conceptual art piece, the five-piece has since become one of the most talked about bands in the Chicago area, playing big sounding indie rock tunes that are particularly "now," but with a touch of vintage, too. If you'd like to check them out, follow the jump to fill out the form and...

Spoon (6:30pm): So here's the thing about Spoon: they're a studio band. And on record, they're pretty much bulletproof for this decade. But the band also have a deserved reputation as a sometimes shaky live act, and such was the case for the show's beginning today. Britt Daniel and the band emerged without opening music or much ceremony, plowing right into a half-dozen tracks from new album Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. But they...

JOSH RITTER What’s The Deal: Josh Ritter graduated from college with a major in American History through Narrative Folk Music, which makes the title of this folk-pop singer/songwriter’s recently released album, The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter, fitting as well as boastful. He can boast all he wants with those hearty lyrics fat with imagery and the voluminous songwriting of this, his fifth album. Comparisons to Bob Dylan as well as John Lennon immediately come...

This one has been prominent on our radar for awhile: a great show at Emo's featuring some hot, talented girls from Brooklyn, and two of the most solid bands in our scene. Tonight at Emo's don't miss Corto Maltese and their driving, moody rock opening for local pop sensation breakouts Oh No! Oh My!, and headliners Au Revoir Simone with their gleeful casio-rchestrations. A perfect Thursday show if we do say so ourselves.

We talked about Ryan Adams' latest full-length, Easy Tiger , just recently: The album is truly an Adams Tex-Mex combo meal: an entrée of Heartbreaker, Gold, and Cold Roses with a side of Rock’N’Roll ... Fans will really like this record, while newcomers might ask someone to recommend the five best tracks to download (we’d start with “These Girls,” “Oh My God, Whatever, Etc.,” and “Everybody Knows.”) If you're an old school fan or...

In a town as creative as ours, there is plenty of ongoing chatter about “the next big thing," and (usually) further discussions regarding the viability of the buzz related to those bands. We strive to bring our readers show listings and news updates for some of Austin’s finest, be it Spoon or Ghostland Observatory. Amidst all that, we also do our best to recommend some of the city’s lesser known but equally talented acts....

It must be the week of a major holiday, because there won't be a lot of new beautiful stuff on the walls at Waterloo or End of an Ear this week. If you're anxious for Kelly Rowlands' latest (Ms. Kelly), you're breathing a big sigh of relief right now, but H-town is about as close to home as it gets July 3 (please correct us if we're wrong). The new Madlib effort, Yesterday's New...

Ryan Adams – Easy Tiger (Lost Highway): We like Ryan Adams: he’s witty, annoying, moody, talented, and 100% rock star. It’s unfortunate, then, that his output is so often uneven. Like a poster child for iPod album editing, Adams throws a handful of gems on each album, then adds lots of C+ songs with gratuitous swearing and purposefully off-key vocals. Easy Tiger isn’t the complete return to glory that early press suggested, but it...

Oh No! Oh My! are preparing to release their EP, Between the Devil & the Sea on Hollywood's Dim Mak (home to Datarock, the Rakes and more), oh August 7, and have a tour scheduled to support it. The exclamatory darlings will play shows with Au Revoir Simone, Let's Go Sailing! and the Deadly Syndrome. Follow the jump below for a complete tour date listing, and enjoy this song from their upcoming release: Oh...

Lavender Diamond's latest album, Imagine Our Love, is part '70s smooth ballad (think Karen Carpenter's solo albums) and part intriguing mystery (now think Kate Bush's Cloudbusting), but all beauty. The Matador band is in town tonight, performing at the Parish Room on 6th, and we'd love you to go. This entry is now closed Lavender Diamond w/ Entrance & Oh No! Oh My! Tuesday, June 12 Parish Room (map) 9 PM $12 Lavender Diamond...

Taylor Mills Lullagoodbye (Aquapulse) There’s a new safe word being grunted out of S&M dungeons everywhere, and it is Lullagoodbye. It means slow down, ease up and take fewer risks. Although the album mostly lies within the boundaries of uninspired adult contemporary, at times her voice is filled with smooth, sometimes-sultry melody and a graceful piano whispers like a bedtime story. Then, there’s the added bonus of looking at her staggeringly attractive mug on every...

Now that we're in mid-January, club bookings for winter and spring shows are beginning to emerge. While much internet browsing has already been done looking for the SXSW 2007 lineup, there are also plenty of great touring shows dropping in outside of those dates (thankfully). New shows from The Roots, Explosions In The Sky, Midlake, and a Willie Nelson/Merle Haggard double bill top the new additions, but there is plenty here for all musical...

Sandra Bullock, appearing on Late Night with David Letterman, talked about her new house in Austin and excitedly mentioned the new Whole Foods. It's nice to know that we're not the only ones excited to the point of public babbling by a fancy new grocery store in our neighborhood. We look forward to seeing Sandra and her new boy toy Jesse James piling food from the salad bar into the cute little cardboard to-go...

Earlier Austinist let you know that we're here for you, we want to guide you in the right direction so you don't end up at the wrong show this week, we want to make your life easier and narrow down your choices. We want to hold your hand. But we know there are some of you who want to make your own choices, so independent you are! For you we direct you to Oh My Rockness!, the beloved little New York indie rock broadsheet has adapted itself in order to cover the center of the music universe this week, Austin. Check out every single show listing happening around town over the next few days right here. We must warn you though, if you're already torn on what to see then this will not solve any of your problems. Austinists collective head nearly exploded upon trying to make the decision of whether to see the Album Leaf, Asobi Seksu or Billy Idol tonight. The knowledge of knowing that the Thermals and the Wrens are also playing, does not help (although it did help bump Billy Idol out of contention, what were we thinking?!) Our best advice to you is to check out your "must-see" bands entire SXSW schedule because they're probably playing more than once over the next few days, and make your decisions from there. Or get drunk and go wherever that dude in front of you is going to, we're sure it'll be great. Drinking makes music better, so even if you make the wrong decision - you'll still have fun.
