Whether someone at City of Austin shares our love for the undead or some enterprising hackers messed around with construction property, the end result is pretty hilarious. See it for yourself on the northbound side of North Lamar by MLK, before it's taken down.

North Central - An on-going series of shots from the sidewalks, driveways and lawns of the North Central Austin
Polls are open from 7am to 7pm.
Chicago rapper Lupe Fiasco’s two albums are anomalies on the rap racks: winding, wordy projects with few A-list cameos, recognizable producers, or sure-fire singles. That he’s managed to build himself into a successful international brand is not a little bit attributable to a unique set of circumstances. There’s the trap-hop backlash, a dirge in the straight-up New York sound resulting from Atlanta’s ascent, the Kanye Effect, the Jay-Z Effect, that music blogging thing...
Former Austin mayor Gus Garcia struck and killed a pedestrian with his car in an accident Sunday evening on North Lamar Boulevard.
Yesterday's afternoon standoff outside a North Austin apartment turned out to be much ado about nothing, after SWAT officers discovered that their target, Bravlio Briones, wasn't home. Briones, 34, is wanted on charges of aggravated assault. During an argument outside the El Tijuana Bar on North Lamar early Monday morning, he allegedly stabbed one of his friends, ran him over with his car, ran another guy over with his car, and, presumably to emphasize whatever...
In April we captured hot local looks for spring, asking local boutique owners to create outfits based on their new stock for the season. We had so much fun doing it that we asked other store owners to come up with cool ensembles for fall. This time we cast our net a little farther by choosing four old and new boutiques in different regions of Austin: By George on North Lamar, Solid Gold off...
"If you want a young girl for sex, call this number," read the business cards passed out to potential customers. Austin police did just that, and discovered a human trafficking ring that forced illegal immigrant women to work as prostitutes in exchange for being smuggled into the country. After a year-long investigation and two undercover operations, police last Friday arrested Gustavo Gonzalez Luna, 50, and Javier Torres Cruz, 24, on charges of aggravated promotion of...
HBMG Foundation is still inviting folks to apply for the 2007 ArtSpark Festival, a twelve-week-long creative festival and competition that pits teams of theatre junkies, video game developers, and visual artists against one another to create awesome new works. At orientation, each team is given a "spark," an object which serves as the catalyst and inspiration to jumpstart the team's creative process. If you'd like to apply but can't find a team to join,...
One of Austin's favorite wine educators, Jane Nickles, is hosting a free wine tasting class (complete with a glass or two of free wine) at Book People this Saturday at 5pm.
Austin luxe clothier By George was recently added to GQ Magazine's ongoing list of America's Top 100 Shops for Men, joining the likes of NYC's Bergdorf Goodman, SF's American Rag, and Dallas/Houston's Billy Reid:

To imagine the love child of Maya Angelou and Kara Walker is to envision -- however hypothetically -- the potent soulfulness expressed by Gee's Bend Quilts, now on show at the Austin Museum of Art.

There are dubious Hatches, like Survivor Winner Richard Hatch (BOO!). And there are good Hatches, like the delicious namesake chile peppers grown in Hatch, New Mexico (YAY!). The Hatch Chile Pepper Festival at Central Market (this weekend and next) is to food nerds what American Idol is to, well, nerds. Every year we go and stuff carts full of specialty products made from peppers from Hatch, New Mexico (Hatch hot dog buns, Hatch pesto,...
Because Black History Month is relegated to 28 short February days, and because Arizona didn’t even celebrate MLK, Jr. Day until 2004, it’s only fitting that the long, beautiful month of June serves as National Soul Food Month.

Owing to the fire last week that destroyed most of the building housing KOOP's studios, the member-owned community radio station is being forced to relocate. At the modest downtown offices on Fifth and San Jacinto, built back in the 1930s, KOOP paid a mere $750 a month for rent. Now, strapped for cash and unable to cover relocation costs, they'll be having a slew of benefit events through the end of February. Meanwhile, the...
For the second time in as many months, the Wells Fargo at 9810 North Lamar was knocked over by a solo bank robber. Back in November, an anonymous tip to Crime Stoppers pointed Austin Police in the direction of the first guy who robbed the Wells Fargo - in just little over a week. News8 reports: Police say a suspect entered the branch about 9:15 a.m. Tuesday, demanded cash, then sped away in an older...

A few month's ago we sold our tiny house in North Loop and leaped across Lamar to rent an even tinier house in Brentwood. The official parameters of Brentwood are North Lamar and Burnet to the East and West, and Justin Lane and 45th Street to the North and South, but much like Hyde Park and other neighborhoods the lines tend to get stretched and muddled. We were fond of the North Loop area....
