Movie poster from Golden Compass official website** Ed note: our sincere apologies for not posting this on Friday, when you'd most likely be looking for new movies to watch. But cheer up! These are all still playing! The Golden Compass: At last, the adaptation of the wonderful, sublime, transcendent Philip Pullman books hits the screen. Nicole Kidman is the icy antiheroine, Daniel Craig is the father figure, and a child actress named Dakota (but not...
New Movies This Week: The Atheism That Isn't, Plus The Clash and Scalpels
AFS Essentials: Invasion of the Body Snatchers
As part of their summer Global Minds, Other Worlds: Global Sci-Fi Cinema series, the Austin Film Society presents Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978). In this masterful remake of the '50s original, director Philip Kaufman confirms once and for all that soulless pod people are, truly, a mass-anxiety filmic allegory for the ages. The first Body Snatchers (1956) saw alien seeds drifting to a small California town, quietly killing off its inhabitants and hatching...
Our Own Apocalypto: This Week's New Movie Releases!
There's been plenty of buzz about a couple of today's new releases (anyone noticed the abundance of commercials for diamonds lately? It ain't just the holiday season), but you might be able to pick out a few gems from the list. Depending on what you consider a "gem," of course. Us, well, we're just happy when someone else buys our movie ticket and a drink (or several) afterwards so we can go home and...
The Last of the Fest
Some of us didn't get to as many movies at this year's Austin Film Festival as we would have liked, because we got busy and we were tired and, we admit, a little bit too lazy to drive downtown. And some of us missed some screenings because of baseball mania (you know who you are). Nevertheless, the last couple of nights of AFF 2005 are upon us and there are still cool and interesting movies to see. First, Manderlay, Lars Von Trier's sequel to the highly controversial and divisive (but we say masterpiece), Dogville, with Bryce Dallas Howard (yes, Opie's daughter) taking over the role of Grace from Nicole Kidman.
Reviews of Movies We Haven’t Seen
Bewitched From director Nora Ephron, who brought us such sugary sweet servings as “Sleepless in Seattle” and “You’ve Got Mail,” comes this reimagining of the classic 60’s television sitcom of the same name. Will Ferrell, whom we obviously love for his comedic chops (Blue Oyster Cult sketch, anyone?), if not his fine acting skills, plays Jack, a struggling actor who is cast to play Darrin in a remake of the tv show. He gets...
Nicole Kidman Has Good Posture
Sydney Pollack's The Interpreter opened this weekend here in Austin. We saw it at the Gateway, snuggled between a guy with a serious popcorn eating compulsion, and a teenage girl who admired our purse. We ate peanut butter M&Ms accompanied by a small coke -- not a bad dinner by our standards. Yes, sometimes Austinist goes to the movies alone. And we are okay with that.
