Ringo Deathstarr, Sundress, Ishi and More at Beauty Bar [Show Preview]

Ringo Deathstarr, Sundress, Ishi and More at Beauty Bar [Show Preview]

Free week soldiers on through Saturday night, with a showcase at Beauty Bar featuring a grand total of eight bands. Headlining the evening are local shoegaze rockers Ringo Deathstarr, fresh off a tour opening for the Smashing Pumpkins across Europe. With frequent comparisons to My Bloody Valentine, Ringo Deathstarr manage to create tunes that sound fresh, teetering between melodies and fuzzed out noise. In memoriam of Esme Barrera, the group is also helping raise funds for her funeral by giving a cover of "Sailin' On" to anyone who donates to the cause here. more ›

The Sea and Cake at The Mohawk [Photos and Review]

The Sea and Cake have been playing together since 1994, which translates to a solid seventeen years of jazzy indie-pop creation spanning nine full-length albums. That longevity was on display Thursday night at The Mohawk, as the quartet threw down a solid set on the outdoor stage. more ›

The discordant, bare, but still surprisingly melodic self-title album from Anika is what you'd call an experience - the odd parts pull you in, and the melodies hold you close. more ›

Save Hot Tracks: Benefit at Club DeVille Tonight

Want to talk about an Austin institution that embodies the spirit of the city? Talk about Hot Tracks, a recording studio that strives to maintain the distinct qualities of the Austin artists it tracks. But like so many other grassroots Austin efforts, Hot Tracks is at odds with a powerful force: condo developers. As such, the City of Austin has condemned Hot Tracks' East side location, and owner Matt Smith has no choice but to move and rebuild. more ›

Sunrise with Live Score by My Education [Alamo Drafthouse S. Lamar / Tonight]

Sunrise with Live Score by My Education [Alamo Drafthouse S. Lamar / Tonight]

And we can’t forget about My Education, an exceptionally talented outfit that has perfected a stirring score for Sunrise: A Song Of Two Humans, the 1927 F.W. Murnau film. The local band honed these original compositions over the course of the last two years, both here in town and on the road, and the fruits of its labor are now available on CD via Portland label Strange Attractors Audio House. (The vinyl is set to drop later this month.) The official release party was held at the Alamo Drafthouse Ritz on April 25th, and if you missed it, you’re in luck because tonight, My Education presents an encore performance of its new masterpiece in conjunction with a screening of the film, of course, at Alamo Drafthouse on South Lamar. The show starts at 10 p.m.; get your tickets here and purchase Sunrise the CD here. more ›

Weekend Music Preview: Red Sparowes @ Red 7 [Friday]

Weekend Music Preview: Red Sparowes @ Red 7 [Friday]

Headliners Red Sparowes hail from Los Angeles and were in Austin as recently as last November, performing at the beloved Fun Fun Fun Fest. Sometimes considered a side-project, an erroneous detail refuted during our pre-Fun Fest interview with members of the band, Red Sparowes is comprised of respected veterans such as Bryan Clifford Meyer (Isis), Greg Burns (Halifax Pier), Dave Clifford (Pleasure Forever), and Andy Arahood (Angel Hair). Meyer’s fellow Isis band mate Jeff Caxide and Neurosis’ Josh Graham were both a part of the original lineup as well; guitarist Emma Ruth Randle joined the band last year following Graham’s exit. Red Sparowes’ two full-lengths adroitly package controlled chaos into stirring doses of euphoric rock. The band’s third LP is due next Tuesday so expect plenty of new material this evening at Red 7. more ›

Giveaway: Win Tickets to Warpaint [Tonight at Emo's]

It’s not that Warpaint doesn’t want you to read the proverbial writing on the wall; this beguiling psychedelic outfit has smudged the message simply because they like it better that way, and you probably do, too. Offering you a hit of backlit, smoky lullabies sung in dreamy female harmonies, it’s no wonder this Los Angeles band has gained both Hollywood devotees (Heath Ledger was among them), and a reputation for stealing live shows from their headliners. more ›

Show Preview: Gliss, My Education, The Clouds Are Ghosts, and New Roman Times at Stubb's

Something about walking down to the basement bar at Stubb's feels like you're walking back in time. You almost expect Teddy Roosevelt to charge you a nickel at the entrance for the price of admission and a brown paper cone of hot mustard peanuts. Now, we're well aware that Stubb's is not that old, and maybe it's just the smoky tang in the air from all that cooking meat, but we're just sayin'. It's pleasant. It's even better when you're coming out to catch four (count 'em) bands all worth their salt and a bag of chips. more ›

Weekend Music Preview: My Education and Margot & the Nuclear So and So's

Weekend Music Preview: My Education and Margot & the Nuclear So and So's

Local post-rock connoisseurs My Education bring expansive walls of sound to the comforts of Emo’s Lounge this Saturday. The band expertly constructs stirring atmospheric rock, patiently adding appropriate layers and a textured ambiance to their cinematic compositions via a plethora of instruments including the pedal steel guitar, piano, violin, and vibraphone. Fittingly, My Education have performed at the Alamo Drafthouse in the past, scoring films ranging from (Mamoru Oshii’s) Angel’s Egg to (F.W. Warnau’s) Sunrise, a true testament to their talent. The Dead Science headline with spastic spurts of experimental rock that seem disjointed on first listen but are impressively coherent when you indulge the somewhat eerie concoctions. The diverse instrumentation and the varying standards create quite the avant-garde ruckus; it should all make for a raucous live show. The Seattle band released their third full-length Villainaire earlier this year. more ›

My Education - Bad Vibrations CD Release Tonight At Emo's!

My Education - Bad Vibrations CD Release Tonight At Emo's!

If we read one more article about how My Education sounds a bit like a certain currently famous Austin instrumental four piece but-seriously-they're-really-good-too we're going to throw up in our mouths. They don't. Yes, you are correct in assessing that they both play music that lacks vocals - which are simply another instrument, not the defining taxonomic characteristic by which we categorize bands - but they are distinct entities making distinct music. more ›

Austinist Show Preview: The Boxing Lesson, Experimental Aircraft, The Story Of, and My Education

It's always great catching a band at their CD Release show, because you know they're going to be fired up and ready to bring it. And such is the state of this Thursday at The Parish Room, where Austin-proud The Boxing Lesson will be dropping their new disc, Wild Streaks & Windy Days, an unabashedly Pink Floyd-esque collection of psychedelic rock. With songs like "Muerta" and "Back from the Dead," they establish an eerily sinister tone that's ably coupled with songs nodding to their forebears, such as "Dark Side of the Moog." more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Six Organs of Admittance at Mohawk

Six Organs of Admittance, complete with awkward band name and bootfulls of whispery/screechy talent, will be taking this town by storm (or sea, or desert cyclone) tonight at the Mohawk. Serving up super-soothing melodies mixed with squalls of distortion to make one big ball of twine, psych-folk style, Six Organs has over the last ten years developed an utterly unique sound, as well as a veritable sand dune of critical acclaim. While they usually tend toward the contemplative and hauntingly beautiful, their most recent album, Shelter from the Ash, has some disturbingly dead-on rockers sure to shake the Mohawk all the way to the lake. And did we mention that Six Organs' frontman Ben Chasney is a guitar god? more ›

Image from MySpace Trans Am, My Education @ MohawkThursday, Nov. 15The Mohawk (912 Red River)9 PM, All ages, $8[info] | [tickets]It's unfriggingbelievable that these guys are on tour with Tool right now. My Education In Store, EP Release @ End of An Ear Saturday

If you've ever been to the Texas/Oklahoma State Fair, you know that area between the ferris wheel and the Dizzy Dragons: it begs for rock. It glistens, yearns, begs for an instrumental post-rock 5-piece to grace it with versions of "Spiegel im Spiegel" (Arvo Part), long-form pieces composed for F.W. Murnau's classic 1927 silent film Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans, and the other, more traditional state fair-ready jams: you know, the kind with vibraphone... more ›

Austinist Show Preview: Cue CD Release at Emo's

Cue are a self proclaimed "chamber-rock" band whose brilliant combination of orchestral arrangements and hard hitting post rock have earned them praise from both critics and audiences alike. They are among the handful of exceptionally gifted instrumental bands such as Explosions In the Sky, Octopus Project, My Education, and Skiesfalling here in Austin. Their amazing instrumental acrobatics go from the soft and spellbinding to eruptions of passionate musical violence. This Friday, June 29th marks the... more ›

Maserati & My Education @ Emo's Tonight

Maserati & My Education @ Emo's Tonight

Athens, Georgia's Maserati are a compelling group of lads playing what is oft-dismissed as simply post-rock instrumental badassery, but their palate is certainly more interesting. Calling the old days of Can and other similarly misunderstood psych-prog sorts of groups, Maserati mixes math rock and experimental edge to create genuinely interesting music on their latest release, Inventions for the New Season. They'll be playing tonight at Emo's along with one of our favorite local acts... more ›

New Release Tuesday: Ola Podrida, Sa-Ra & Grails

Ola Podrida (Plug Research) David Wingo splits his time between Brooklyn and Austin composing the soundtrack to the Polaroid taking, scarf wearing community of slow-moving coffee sippers and film lovers. His work with director David Gordan Green (All the Real Girls, Snow Angels) has provided him with an outlet for his soft and subtle odes, but his new project under the name Ola Podrida offers a bit of a broader spectrum, at least... more ›
