A unique, understated little love letter to the Manchester music scene, 24 Hour Party People encompasses nearly two decades of groundbreaking genres and subgenres. Your narrator of sorts is TV journalist/Factory Records founder Tony Wilson (embodied by the oddly charming Steve Coogan of Hamlet 2); Wilson nonchalantly breaks down the fourth wall to school us on punk, New Wave and DJ-run dance floors, continuously reminding his the audience that the film is not about him. The English music mogul serves as the perfect teacher for an epic $2 Manchester "Music Monday" history lesson at the Alamo Ritz.
(Manchester) Music Monday: 24 Hour Party People
Music Monday Preview: Who Is Harry Nilsson?
Tonight's edition of Music Monday at the Alamo Ritz features John Scheinfeld's acclaimed documentary, Who Is Harry Nilsson? (And Why Is Everybody Talkin' About Him). This film has languished for several years after debuting on the festival circuit in 2006 because of music rights issues. It would be difficult, after all, to tell the story of a singer and songwriter like Nilsson without using clips of his songs. Legal issues settled, Lorber Films has recently released the film on DVD and we can highly recommend checking it out for Music Monday.
Music Monday: Kid Creole & My Coconuts [Preview]
Kid Creole and the Coconuts released seven albums on major labels in the 80s, but struggled for commercial success. They were always met with critical acclaim and did produce a few singles that achieved considerable dance club play (like 1985's "Endicott"), but the mainstream always seemed to elude them even while media outlets like the UK's NME were calling them "the best live band in the world."
Music Monday Double-Header: Guided By Voices & Pavement
Before you head on out to their heavily anticipated reunion tours later this week, bust out your flannels and tattered jeans to wax nostalgic with two of indie rock’s most celebrated bands of the 1990’s -- legendary Matador alums Guided By Voices and Pavement. Alamo Drafthouse has teamed up with End Of An Ear and Matador for a very special Music Monday featuring a double header of Watch Me Jumpstart and Slow Century.
Music Mondays Presents: Thelonious Monk: Straight, No Chaser
When Thelonious Monk passed away in 1982, his status as an innovator and one of the leading figures in modern jazz music was well established. A pianist who cut his first recording in 1944, Monk went on to work with fantastic musicians over his remarkable career including Sonny Rollins (tenor sax), Art Blakey (drums), Miles Davis (trumpet), John Coltrane (tenor sax) and many others. An unusual and versatile performer, Monk’s personal behavior was often just as spontaneous, and his relationships with others, including his wife and child, were as challenging as some of his best music.
Music Mondays: Holy Modal Rounders Were Bound to Lose
Tonight at the Alamo Downtown, $2 Music Monday will feature a documentary by local filmmaker Samuel Wainwright Douglas: Holy Modal Rounders: Bound to Lose.
Music Mondays Presents Nashville Girl
It's been a week of "lasts" at the original Alamo Drafthouse, including the last Terror Thursday, Master Pancake Theater, A/V Geeks and Butt-numb-a-thons ever to happen at the venerable Colorado St. location. And tonight marks another sad Alamo last--one that we're particularly bummed about--the last Music Monday. Though the series is slated to continue at the Alamo's fancy new 6th Street location sometime in the fall, tonight will probably be the last installment programmed by...

Music Mondays Presents Here We Come: The History of Breakdancing in East Germany
It's the second-last Music Monday at the original Alamo Downtown, so if you haven't been in a while (or if, God forbid, you've NEVER been) tonight is the night. Here We Come is a documentary chronicling the rise of Hip Hop and Breakdance culture in communist East Germany during the 1980s--which, we imagine, was an incredibly bizarre time to be involved in any music scene there. Director Nico Raschick describes the film as "a documentary,...

Music Mondays Presents We Were Never Here
Tonight, Alamo Music Mondays presents the US Premiere of We Were Never Here, a film about the German avant-rock band Mutter. Though the band has been around since the 80s, we have to admit that we don't know much about them—and though the Google-translated version of their Wikipedia page is hilarious, it isn't entirely informative. Documentary about DC's 9:30 Club Tonight at Alamo Downtown
Anyone who has spent any time in Washington D.C. has undoubtedly logged hundreds of hours at the 9:30 club. Last year the club sold 236,000+ tickets to shows, making it the most popular club venue in America, followed in positions 2-6 by House of Blues franchises. The club opened 26 years ago, and before it was located on V street, it was downtown at 930F and was host to some of the best punk...
