Have you heard? SXSW Music announced that Bruce Springsteen is their 2012 Keynote Speaker!
The Boss to Deliver SXSW Music's 2012 Keynote Speech
Five Years of FFF Fest Photos - Part 4: 2007
Today, in Part 4 of our 5-part Fun Fun Fun Fest photo album, we look back to 2007 when F3Fest was only two years old. This year the Fest's stages were rocked by the Murder City Devils, Sick of it All, Angry Samoans, The Sword, Cat Power and the New Pornographers.
Getting Pretty Fond of Fx3 [Fun Fun Fun Fest Memory]
Somehow I overlooked the first couple of years of Fx3 as a transplant to Austin still elated and overwhelmed by the plethora of accessible live music available on the regular. But in 2009, I scored a cozy introduction manning a booth at the fest for a few hours one day in exchange for a weekend wristband. Why not, right? I had no idea what to expect and found myself pleasantly surprised by the laid back scene - not too crowded, manageable lines for beer/food, and a good mix of fans. I have since happily resigned any interest I once had in attending ACL for a yearly fling with Fun Fun Fun. And while I adore the excitement and unparalleled buzz SXSW generates, the intimacy of Fx3 has made it my favorite of Austin’s fests.
Ditch the Fest Fest 2, and Donate to Wildfire Victims [Show Preview]
You might have heard that ACL is this weekend. You might be aware that the lineup is, in this writer's opinion, the best it's been in years. You might have even seen that the forecast does NOT call for sweltering heat, suffocating dust or anything else that could just as easily be from the Book of Exodus as real life in Austin, TX.
Wild Frontier Fest with The Octopus Project, White Denim, Wavves and many more
Seems like it's been a few weeks since the last music festival, doesn't it? ACL and Fun Fun Fun Fest are still around autumn's corner, but a smaller, burgeoning festival this weekend at Emo's promises two full days of fun for much less hassle and cash than our city's more mainstream music-and-arts extravaganzas. It's called Wild Frontier Fest, and in this, its second year, it lays claim to Emo's for both Saturday and Sunday with an expanded roster of indie-rock and folk bands from near (White Denim) and far (Peelander-Z, who continue their remarkable run of playing every Austin music festival in 2011).
Backbeat Magazine Block Party [Show Preview]
Our sometimes-sister city San Antonio often gets the short end of the stick when it comes to music coverage, but it’s recently shown signs of life. Backbeat Magazine was founded to rectify this oversight, highlighting an emerging scene that’s making a stand in the Alamo City, a la William B. Travis et al. Now, Backbeat’s spreading their reach up I-35 with an ATX office that’s making a big summer splash this weekend with a massive block party on 7th Street.
ACL Fest: Ohio's Heartless Bastards Break Out of the Garage
Like fellow Ohioans The Black Keys and Texas up-and-comers White Denim, Heartless Bastards, the garage all-stars from Cincinnati, are at the center of a return to rough rock, and provide an alternative to the unfuzzy rock of bands such as Vampire Weekend and Fleet Foxes. Sunday evening on the oft-underrated Austin Ventures Stage, megaphone-voiced singer Erika Wennerstrom led the set, with able assistance from the big bass rhythms of Jesse Ebaugh and the steady but hard-hitting drums of Dave Colvin.
Snapshots: Knitting at Neko
The quickly setting sun and the dreamy background vocals of Neko Case provided the perfect environment for knitting up a little ditty on Sunday at the ACL Music Festival.
ACL Fest: Neko Case Delivers Dreamy Rhythms
Playing on the coveted shady stage of AMD, Neko Case presented a romantic steady pulse.
ACL Fest: Quirky Sassy Soulful Stars
With a stage decorated in silver flowers and red roses, Stars came onto the ACL scene looking cool and confident. While the heat was probably killing them (and everyone in the audience) it didn't stop the passion from ringing strong in their voices.
ACL Fest: Robert Plant & Alison Krauss Share The Stage, A Harmony
When bluegrass legend Alison Krauss took her place on stage right next to rock music icon Robert Plant the two seemed so naturally comfortable, cooperative and complementary that it was as if they'd been playing together and recording for several years.
ACL Fest: Beck Closes Out Saturday Night in Subdued Glory
After what seemed like an eternity of anticipation from a crowd chanting his name softly, Beck finally arose from his lair behind stage and began the night with an angsty classic, "Loser." Adorning his most recent look of long blond locks and cowboy hat, Beck gave a nostalgic performance realizing his audience grew up listening to albums like Mellow Gold and Odelay. He did up the pace a bit, playing "Gamma Ray" off his new album Modern Guilt, but the pinnacle of his performance was in hits like "Where It's At" and "Devil's Haircut" which make every bone in your body happy. And yes, even people in line for the port-a-potties couldn't resist dancing. A long-standing frontman, Beck has not lost his stamina and still manages to remain mysteriously omniscient. With a catchy pulse and captivating rhythms, Beck wooed the souls of a sea at people who didn't mind staying late after a long day of great acts. There was a blithe vibe in the air as fans enjoyed a few more beers and chatted with friends, while stretched across blankets. A sudden switch to the wicked beats of "Hell Yes" brought about electric chanting. The performance sparked conversation in my group realizing we forgot how much we truly liked Beck's music and how it pushed us through awkward transformative years. A quick iPhone search led us to discover that he is indeed 38 years old, but still sexy and soulful nonetheless. Critics and hipsters- say what you will, but he definitely surpassed by Becktations. -Candace Birkelbach

Austinist Show Giveaway: Rodrigo y Gabriela at La Zona Rosa
Austinist is pleased to bring you the chance to win a pair of tickets to Saturday evening’s sold out Rodrigo y Gabriela show at La Zona Rosa. Astute guitarists both, Rodrigo Sánchez and Gabriela Quintero spent some time plying their trade in a metal band (Tierra Acida) in Mexico before striking the right chords under their current moniker. The duo’s discography consists of Foc (2001), re-Foc (2003), Live: Manchester and Dublin (2004), and 2006’s self-titled effort; their instrumental takes on Metallica’s “Orion” and Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway To Heaven” are already semi-cult classics.

My Ex-Boyfriend's Band: Festival Fest
Editor's note: My Ex-Boyfriend's Band is a reoccurring column that features the opinions and insight of the author, not necessarily reflective of the Ist network as a whole. Thank you for reading! For the times they are a-changin'. And the music festivals are a-changin' with them. Even Dylan, who declined to take the stage at Woodstock in 1969, evolved into the 2007 Austin City Limits headliner. With SXSW, Fun Fun Fun and the C3...

ACL Music Festival Artist Interview: The National
Brooklyn based The National will grace our town with their presence at the 2007 Austin City Limits Music Festival. The band is comprised of Matt Berninger, Aaron Dessner, Bryce Dessner, Bryan Devendorf, and Scott Devendorf. (Yes, that’s two sets of siblings!) The National expertly combine catchy riffs and appropriate strings with affecting lyrics (sometimes poignant, while seemingly abstract on other occasions). Although we feel that their music is best suited for a late night, we recommend getting out to Zilker Park early enough to catch their set on Sunday, September the 16th.
