Play It, Sam [Summer Film Series at the Paramount Starts Up]

One of our favorite things to do during a steamy Austin summer is to enjoy a classic film in the cool air-conditioning of Austin's historic Paramount Theatre. The 2011 Paramount Summer Classic Film Series schedule was released a couple weeks ago; this summer's selections are a diverse mix of some very familiar titles and some foreign and lesser-known. more ›

Hump Day Encouragement: Augie Garrido Yells at You [NSFW, Video]

The Internet just reminded us of this classic scene from Richard Linklater's 2008 documentary Inning By Inning: A Portrait of a Coach, which followed University of Texas baseball coach Augie Garrido, the winningest coach in NCAA history. Above is a bit of the film that might inspire those of us going through Friday Night Lights withdrawals to make it through the rest of the work week. Enjoy, but beware: there's more curse words in there than a truck stop diner. more ›

Beer + Film: Dogfish Head + Alamo Drafthouse Host 4th Annual Off-Centered Film Fest

Dogfish Head, despite Delaware roots, really does understand Austin. Normal does not excite us. Give us the bizarre, the weird, the off-centered. Give us off-centered beers served up with off-centered films for off-centered people, and make a festival out of it, and we’re there. This year, the Off-Centered Film Fest is bigger than ever, including four quirky and exciting events spanning April 14th-16th. more ›

In Contracorriente (translation: Undertow), Miguel and his wife Mariela live in a small coastal Peruvian village and are expecting their first child. Heavy Accents and Long Notes? Glorious [The Action Pack ONCE Sing-Along]

Heavy Accents and Long Notes? Glorious [The Action Pack ONCE Sing-Along]

Sure it's fun to sing along to something like "Party in the USA," but nothing compares to the bliss of yelling out lyrics with an attempted accent. Little excites us more on road trips than popping in The Cranberries and joining Dolores O'Riordan as she reaches notes and sounds that don't exist anywhere else on this planet. If that's something you can get into, why not try Glen Hansard's voice on for sound at The Action Pack's ONCE Sing-Along at the Alamo Ritz this Thursday (+ an additional sing-along next Thursday, August 19th). more ›

Clash of the Titans: Damn The Gods... and This Movie [Late to the Party]

Clash of the Titans: Damn The Gods... and This Movie [Late to the Party]

We all know that for the most part, summer action flicks aren't really about compelling stories or interesting dialogue—we would equate them to being 17 and letting the quarterback feel you up in the backseat of his older brother's car—they're cheap thrills and nothing more. Of course, every once in a while we are treated to a real action movie gem. Remember 2008's The Dark Knight or last year's Star Trek? Don't get excited, Clash of the Titans is no gem. more ›

SXSW Film Preview: No Crossover - The Trial of Allen Iverson

In 1993, Allen Iverson allegedly hit a woman with a chair during a bowling alley brawl provoked by a racial slur. Even then—at 17 years old—Iverson was a basketball superstar, widely regarded as the best high school player in the country, and the criminal trial that followed made national headlines while dividing his hometown of Hampton Virginia along clearly established lines of class and race. Was Iverson an egomaniacal thug who deserved punishment, or was he unfairly persecuted by a predominantly white small-town establishment? more ›

Dancing, Singing, Nifty Jackets: Best of Soul Nite w/ Peter Lucas, Tonight at the Alamo

Tonight the Alamo Ritz hosts a Best Of Soul Nite, curated by Peter Lucas. Here, you can see rare performance footage from a stellar list of artists (the Alamo site name-checks James Brown, Joe Tex, Lee Dorsey, Etta James, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Stevie Wonder, Ray Charles, and Ike & Tina Turner). If this type of music moves you, you are in luck—shaking it in the aisles is highly encouraged. We would also recommend putting on some kind of interesting and/or classy soul-inspired outfit, because that would just add to the scene. more ›

Pipkin's travels offer a short, but empowering, paradigm shift for those of us who are too often fixated in our local lives. The things we take away are simple but uplifting: the majority of the world is incredibly poor; but they require comparatively little to live happily; these projects create results very efficiently, and we can help them succeed. more ›

The Austin Foodie scene has truly exploded over the last couple of years, exposing our growing metropolis to so many opportunities to eat tasty food and drink delicious drinks. The Boys Are Back, without Thin Lizzy.

The Boys Are Back, without Thin Lizzy.

Clive Owen's latest is a good little art-house film stuck in the body of a Hollywood script that constantly teeters towards over-sentimentality. I mean, they didn't even get the license for the actual song from "Irish Hard Rock Band" Thin Lizzy. more ›

Interview: Brendt Barbur of the Bicycle Film Festival

Kicking off this Wednesday with Bikes Rock at the Parish La Zona Rosa, the 9th Annual BFF will skid into Austin for five days of bike-centric love, including art shows, after-parties, bike polo and, of course, films about bikes and the people that love to ride them. Luckily, we got the chance to exchange emails with Brendt Barbur, the founding director of the Bicycle Film Festival, about why this festival is important, the culture of cycling and, oddly enough, fashion. more ›

Crash Through That Glass Ceiling at the Paramount [Working Girl, 9 to 5 Double Feature]

Crash Through That Glass Ceiling at the Paramount [Working Girl, 9 to 5 Double Feature]

Look out sexist, egotistical, lying, hypocritical bigots! Tonight and tomorrow night the ladies of the 80s are climbing the corporate ladder and aren't afraid to kick you down a rung if you don't recognize their keen intellect and undeniable business acumen, not matter if you are one of their kind or not. In a stroke of pure brilliance The Paramount has programmed a double feature that will give any other activity tonight or tomorrow night a real run for its money shoulder pads, pairing the Dolly Parton/Lily Tomlin/Jane Fonda triple threat of 9 to 5 with the bony-assed-boss berating, Aqua Net-enhanced prowess of Melanie Griffith in Working Girl. more ›

I Am So Popular: Driven To Distraction

I Am So Popular: Driven To Distraction

A couple of weeks ago Warren and I went to see the movie Moon, sort of a thematic mash-up of that old classic Gaslight meets the Disney flick Parent Trap meets Castaway with a dash of A Boy and His Dog thrown in and some sub-themes that might’ve been derived from Bowie’s Major Tom and Elton’s Rocket Man. That I was able to gather all this from the film is a testament to my ability to multi-task. While it’s true I sometimes purposefully multi-task in the theater—yes, I can knit in the dark—in this case I found myself unintentionally and unhappily tri-tasking. Because the couple sitting next to us WOULD NOT SHUT THE FUCK UP. more ›

Kooky Clamation From Austin Film Festival's Summer Film Camp

Kids are endlessly creative and/or insane, and anyone who has hung out with a 10-year-old for more than a minute knows that the stories they craft are sometimes more bizarre than anything a seasoned wordsmith could ever come up with. The Austin Film Festival's Summer Film Camp allows budding filmmakers to express those words through moving pictures and specifically in this case, through moving clay. The video is only 5 minutes and 52 seconds long, and the four short films contained therein are totally worth a watch. Our favorite happens to be the incredibly wacky Sacred Cupcake, by no-doubt-future-auteurs Colin, Connor and Sam, although all of the participants are to be commended for their super cool work. more ›

This remarkable film (winner of Directing and Audience Awards at this year’s Sundance Film Festival) follows four finalists as they compete to become the next Afghan Star. It's sure to inform, inspire, enlighten, and entertain you.
