Follow That Bird's Singer/guitarist Lauren Green should be proud. She's leading her trio away from the lo-fi garage haze and into Austin's next big thing: solid, never precious guitar rock.

There are many great art events taking place this weekend all over town - here's a rundown of the highlights: On Saturday night Monofonus Press is throwing farewell party for the multi-talented Eric Shaw. Shaw has been in town recording with Peter and the Wolf and also apparently hanging out at the Monofonus compound making mystical paintings and drawings. Matthew Palladino and Chaz Ganster will also have art on exhibit. The show will be followed by an after party at Baby Blue Studios (at 1522 E. 12th) with Peter and the Wolf and other musical guests.
Monofonus Press is doing it again. Their cup runneth over with creative juices, and they’re giving us another chance to sample the sap. They’ve got the market cornered in this town when it comes to the cross-media, artistic explosion. They began the auspicious endeavor of mixing three different art forms like music, writing and illustration into one release with IF 01 often bringing together three different artists who would normally not collaborate.
With each passing day it becomes ever more doubtful that Rolling Stone magazine will pay anyone - let alone me - to fly around the country to tag along with and write about a mediocre rock band while they traverse house parties willy-nilly and take acid. But that's okay. It means less paying gigs, but also fewer glossy, in-depth profiles of hacks like Lenny Kravitz or accounts of visiting the needle exchange with Staind. What you'll get here is a more down to earth account of five bands en route to Denton and Dallas. Hopefully the quality of these groups will offset the lack of rock and roll excess contained in the following account.
Artistic entities like Monofonus Press are like that little extra mint on the pillow of Austin that makes life here that much sweeter. They put out records by artists like Over the Hill, The Golden Boys and Pillow Queens, but they’re a lot more than a record label. Monofonus press also works with writers and visual artists, which they often pair with the records they release for the well-rounded, indie artistic overload that is the IF Series. The Austin-based label + multimedia organization was born and has developed in a very organic way. They started with the intention of putting together like-minded, talented artists to collaborate and produce multi-media excursions, but what they created was a community of interlocking art forms each of which works to further the other. The Press is always evolving, and you can expect that they’ll keep churning out releases as long as the thriving Austin art scene keeps an eye fixed and an ear perked.
Hey look, here are more free, unofficial showcases comin’ at ya, involving pizza, RanchO RelaxO, and Trailer Space Records, though not necessarily in that order.
Austin's Monofonus Press brings together artists, writers, and musicians to collaborate on synchronized distribution. Their latest effort combines artist and writer with one of our favorite local bands, the Pillow Queens. Tonight marks the celebration of their CD release at the Compound, where attendees can also check out Shapes Have Fangs and Human Milk.
Our new East Austin arthouse/bookstore neighbor, Domy Books, is linking up with Monofonus Press for an evening of the visual and written arts. As you may or may not know, Monofonus is a new-ish multimedia imprint with the big goal of pairing new writing, music and the visual arts into some pretty neat packages. Past releases in their “If” series have included the writing and music of Monofonus co-founder Morgan Coy and his band Over the Hill, and future projects will include releases by Diagonals, The Pillow Queens, and other music, visual art, fiction and more.
