Film School, TV Torso, Monahans at The Parish [Show Preview]

The San Francisco band Film School counts itself as adherents to shoegaze, that late ‘80s/early ‘90s sound that utilized titanic walls of sound to pummel the listener with waves of sparkling distortion. But being this far removed from shoegaze’s heyday means the band can experiment with the genre, allowing other influences to creep into the mix. more ›

Le Diamant Brut: Dinosaur Feathers & Monahans

What’s the Deal: The lads in Dinosaur Feathers are hard working. This Brooklyn trio crafts some of the most dense, winding pop fattened up with layers of drum machine, keyboard tones, guitar and vocal melodies sometimes sporting that sound you used to make when you were a kid by singing into the fan. With such a multitude of sounds present, it would be quite easy for the Feathers to lose you in the shuffle, but they do an expert job of holding your interest and stringing you along for a wild, frolicsome ride. Even though their debut, Fantasy Memorial, won’t arrive until the beginning of March, they’ve no doubt worn themselves out playing show after show on their New York stomping ground. But, beginning in March, they’ll be leaving the city streets for a tour down the east coast and entering into the Midwest. more ›

Preview and Giveaway: Monahans and Sad Accordions

It's nice to see great local acts move on up the food chain with vigor and virtue. When two pierce the threshold at once, it's even better. Monahans and Sad Accordions are two such acts. Both bands are finally getting the media attention they deserve, meaning they've probably been busting their ass alongside a steady following of fans for years. more ›

Head West with Magnolia Electric Co, The Donkeys, & Monahans [Sat at Mohawk]

The tools of Molina’s choosing, including dobro and lapsteel guitars, are especially evocative of an aching loss, so its natural that Josephine be his most country influenced album yet. It’s also comparatively stripped-down, so the listener seems confronted with an empty horizon, at every turn expressing something missing. This would all be belabored and depressing- that is, if it weren’t so simply beautiful. more ›

Centro-Matic Mellow Out at The Parish Room [Tonight]

We all know the Austin music scene is amazing and constantly burgeoning, but there's this little town called Denton about three hours to the north that holds a flaming candle to the talent here. The town is home to the University of North Texas where many creative types flock to learn more about music in a much more affordable town. There's dozens of little gems just waiting to be discovered there, but let's face it -- not many of us want to make that drive and give up a weekend in Austin. Luckily, one of the treasures formed in the little D is coming down for a performance at the Parish room. Centro-matic is not newly discovered by any means. more ›
