The relentlessly effervescent Thao Nguyen, who usually works with her excellent band The Get Down Stay Down, and Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn, who has been crafting shattering tunes around her astounding vocal chords for years now, have joined forces for what is sure to be a fun and talented team. Only the third show on this tour, the dynamic twosome---awarded all sorts of critical acclaim independently---will see what they can do together, playing songs from both of their discographies (sounds like a sweet two for one deal, right?), as well as songs they've crafted together, and for each other. Mirah surely still has that stunning voice: alternately coy and seductive, delightfully expressive, and always captivating. And it works very, very well here when she’s not cribbing melodies from her earlier albums, and is utilizing the strengths—bombast, playfulness, youthful energy, a variety of influences, and big production—that made her other albums so eminently replayable. If only those strengths weren’t so often forgotten here, only to be replaced with something a little too coffee shop to satisfy. more ›
