Celebrate Día de los Muertos: Viva la Vida Fest at Mexic-Arte Museum

With Halloween just a week away, the the various seasonal celebrations are in full swing! On Saturday, October 24, the Mexic-Arte Museum will celebrate its 26th Annual Día de los Muertos -- Austin's largest and longest-running Day of the Dead festival -- a lively, traditional Mexican and Latin American holiday that commemorates loved ones who have passed. This year, however, the Mexic-Arte Museum will present Día de los Muertos as "Viva la Vida Fest" to celebrate life and the environment, featuring Latino artists, special exhibitions, music, activities for families, and a Grand Procession.

Here are just a few of the highlights: On Sunday, wrap up the weekend right with yet another whimsical show at the BiRDHOUSE Gallery. In What Is Not But Could Be If Corinne Loperfido and Kevin C. Foote, Ausitnites by way of New York and Chicago, have collaborated to present an eclectic series of portraits. Loperfido's vibrant color photographs are portraits of people wearing beards of unlikely materials - think Rasin Bran, rose petals, and aluminum foil. Foote's complimentary back and white portrait series features pictures of people with cookies in their mouths. This tasty reception takes place on Sunday from 6-9pm. more ›

13th Annual Young Latino Artists: Everything's Going to be Okay at the Mexic-Arte Museum [Art Preview]

Tonight, the Mexic-Arte Museum will celebrate the opening of their 13th run of their annual Young Latino Artists exhibition. YLA 13: Everything's Going to be Okay features the work of Latino artists under the age of 35 who hail from all over Texas. The show focuses on work that challenge traditional mediums and reexamine aesthetic and social norms. Everything's Going to be Okay attempts to illustrate "how moments of vulnerability can turn into our greatest strengths". The show's curator, Leslie Moody Castro, looked for art in a wide range of mediums that represented the personal experiences of the artists, not merely their ethnic or cultural histories. more ›

Aztec Mummy Movie Night at Mexic-Arte Museum

It's a rare and wonderful thing when mummy movies and fine art come together seamlessly. This Friday, the Mexic-Arte Museum and KOOP Radio are putting on just such an anomalous event. In support of the current Aztec and Maya Revival exhibit, the museum is hosting a movie screening featuring the 1957 film La Momia Azteca (Attack of the Aztec Mummy). The film features b-movie standards such as hypnosis, cursed mummies, hidden treasure, and reincarnated Aztec maidens. more ›
