While the fall food event season is quite crowded, one newcomer surprised us last year with an over-the-top debut: Max's Austin Cellar Classic. Essentially a one-restaurant walk-around tasting, the event essentially throws 75 bottles from Max's wine list open for sampling, including both the value selections and the high end splurge bottles. At last year's event, there were fried chicken sliders galore and wines from legends like Two Hands, Far Niente, Caymus, and Krug all up for grabs. This year, the evening event has become a matinee (due to a certain burnt orange sporting event), but the spirit remains intact. To learn more about this year's party, we spoke with Max's partner owner and marketing director Jonathan Horowitz about the Austin Cellar Classic 2.0. (And note: during our conversation, we found out about a discount offer running this weekend only - see below for details.)
Last Minute: Two Cool Wine Events Tonight At Mirabelle And Vino Vino
This week's mild weather makes it a a great time to get out for a glass or three of wine, and if you'd like to shake things up a bit tonight, we have two ideas for you.
Michael Vilim of Mirabelle and Streat (and the dearly departed Castle Hill Cafe) is one of Austin's biggest wine nerds, and he's thrown together a last-minute tasting tonight at Mirabelle to sample a large selection of high-end bottles to determine what to start adding to Mirabelle's extensive wine list.
Food + Drink: Fill Your Wine Glass To The Brim Saturday at Max's, Vino Vino, and The Austin Wine Merchant
As we approach Memorial Day, more and more weekends seem to be filled with hours on the back patio and at barbecues - which usually means that there's some imbibing going on. If you're prepared for the hot weather, but are unsure of what wine to tote along to the next big summer bash, three events taking place this weekend may help to cure that indecision.
Wine: Austin Cellar Classic Is Tomorrow
With October's Tour De Vin at Whole Foods and November's Big Reds and Bubblies at The Driskill, fall is already the favored season for swanky wine and food pairing events in Austin. A new entrant to the mix this year is the Austin Cellar Classic, a 2-day event hosted by Max's Wine Dive combining a pairing dinner on Friday with the main event of a grand wine tasting on Saturday. For this post, we're solely focused on the big wine tasting.
