Week Around the -ists

The Holiday season is in full swing in NYC, with holiday lights in Brooklyn, a giant snow globe in Bryan Park and Chanukah specials for ham. One citizen decided to go vigilante on annoying car alarms, a murder suspect used a fake Asian accent on the stand and a video of a man being beaten up by teenage girls on a subway shocked the city. And we interviewed soon-to-be-leaving-Gawker editor Choire Sicha, who said,... more ›

Image by the "Subway Cyrano," from GothamistNew York City was at its strangest and swellest this week. On Sunday, tens of thousands people ran in the NYC Marathon, including Mrs. Tom Cruise, aka Katie Holmes, who ran it in just under 5 hours, 30 minutes. Gothamist also found out that limes in Corona are sometimes illegal, the weird maple syrup might be back and a famous punk music pioneer-turned-real estate broker was possibly killed by... more ›

Texas Man Embarks On Extraordinary Journey This March

Mikail Davenport cycles towards Kingsville, Texas during the 2005 Capitol Ride. Photo by John Cates. This Sunday, Mikail Davenport, a 58-year old native Texan, will set out for the ride of his life, cycling over 900 miles across our state. In a month. Without using his legs. The marathon that has been renamed more times than Austin has been called the “Live Music Capital of the World” will kick off with a 7AM start time. Founded in 1992, the Austin Marathon and Half Marathon (this year called the AT&T Marathon) is expected to draw 11,000 runners, 30,000 spectators and is the 15th largest marathon in the U.S. One of the more well-known runners (no, it isn't Lance) will be our own mayor... more ›

You Had Us at "Pie"

You Had Us at "Pie"

Royers Round Top Cafe has discovered more fame this year since the Deen boys stopped by for their show, Road Tasted. The Cafe's site has the story of how that show has led them to start selling their pies at Whole Foods' Austin locations, how they needed more space to make more pies, and how they hooked up with American Youthworks and Meals on Wheels and More to do just that. This weekend, to celebrate this new partnership (entitled the Royers Round Top Cafe Austin Pie Empowerment Project), the Cafe will be holding a Pie Drive-Through. Starting yesterday and through Saturday afternoon, the Cafe is selling pies at three Austin sites. You can purchase their dangerously sweet Cafe's Sin-Nammon Ring (so powerful we've been told there's a warning sign for diabetics on it), their pumpkin pie, original buttermilk pie, and more. You can feel good about your purchases because not only will they will taste wonderful, but part of your money goes to these two local non-profits. Plus, buying a pie through this drive-through event will be less expensive than getting it through mail-order. more ›

Halloween is Tuesday, which means this weekend is really the time for all of the –ists to celebrate. And whether they’re designing super-spooky costumes or talking about the super-spooky upcoming elections, we’d say that they’re doing a fine job of it. Austinist knows that few things in life are scarier than zombies, people with way too much money, and politicians who try too hard to be funny. Slightly less scary, depending on whom you... more ›

So go ahead and soak up the suds, but do us all a favor and burn it off at one of the many fun races going... more ›

Austin Underground Film Fest - One Night Only!

Thank Andy Gately for the three-hour assault on conservative values that is the first-annual Austin Underground Film Festival (tonight, 7pm, Drafthouse South Lamar). Andy’s a veteran of Troma Films, Cahiers du Cinemart, and all sorts of interesting projects, including something called the Holocaust Film Sourcebook. He graciously answered a few questions about his latest venture. Thanks for talking to us! Thanks for the chance. And for not being owned by Rupert Murdoch. How did... more ›

3M (Almost) Half Marathon

Every runner worth his or her Gatorade knows that a marathon is 26.2 miles and a half marathon is, well, half of that, or 13.1 miles, right? Well, guess again. Apparently there was an error in the route used for the 3M Half Marathon held last Sunday that caused it to be one-tenth of a mile short of the true half marathon distance. more ›
