Beasts With Hearts Of Gold is a beautiful little gem of a record. Jammed pack with twenty (yes, twenty) songs, it travels the distance between the beginnings of Guided by Voices and early Spoon with unpretentious ease. "Heart Poppers" is particularly Spoon-esque, David Jones' voice sounding so much like young Brit Daniel it's eerie.

Austin's own R&B dreamboats The Strange Boys supply the perfect groove for long nights of awkward shuffling, excessive drinking and desperate sidelong glances at the object of one's affection.

Remember back when jazz was cool? Well, you probably don’t, unless you happen to be in your '60s or '70s. Miles, Thelonious, Freddie Hubbard, Art Blakey, Max Roach, Sonny Rollins (still pumping it out), and countless others made jazz cool, but somewhere along the way it got lost, and it was replaced by genres like dancey post-punk. Luckily, there are young musicians like Parks, Christian Scott and Esperanza Spalding helping to snatch jazz out of the hands of your granddad and hand it down like a Werther’s Original.
